Glen Johnson Empty Glen Johnson

Post by ExtremistEnigma Sat 15 Feb 2014 - 20:34

Surprised we don’t have a thread for him.

Plays like a prime Dani Alves yet provides nothing significant in attack and just leaves the team vulnerable in the defense and susceptible to counter-attacks and this has been the case for over a couple of seasons now. How people rate him more than Enrique is beyond me.

His absence this season has not been felt much, it might be a blessing in disguise rather, due to the emergence of Flanagan, who, like Kelly and Wisdom, is cautious in his approach and certainly a better defender than Johnson.

Johnson isn’t getting any younger and while he perceptibly still looks “good enough” to some people and clubs (I suppose West Ham and QPR) we can make some good bucks by selling him in the summer, not to mention he earns a whooping £100k/w and his contract expires next year.

Flanagan, Kelly and Wisdom will fight for the right-back spot; they are not flashy players but can get their job done. We can reinvest the money earned, in other areas or another RB on the cheap (young/experienced) if BR desires.

Post by Art Morte Sat 15 Feb 2014 - 21:26

It's unrealistic to expect him to be sold, imo, and I'm not sure if I want to, depends could we replace him. I think he's still a better footballer with much more talent than Flanagan, Kelly or Wisdom (at RB). Why unrealistic to be sold: Rodgers probably rates him just fine and no club willing to take him would be willing to match his wages at Liverpool.

However, I am worried that he might not get back to his normal level any more. He certainly hasn't been there so far this season - and I hate his set-piece or high-ball defending. But is it just me or has he gained a bit of weight from his better seasons?

Anyway, when we have all RBs fit, I still prefer Johnson and I wouldn't try to replace him yet, but he certainly should improve on his this season's showings and get benched if he performs poorly. If he doesn't do well next season, then it's time to look for replacements.

Been below average for a full year now and offers provides me a heart attack every time when the opposition utilize their left flank. Was known to be scintillating in attack given he is a rare two-footed fullback yet he's ponderous on the ball and compliments nothing for our attack.

All the signs of a player well in decline as I won't repeat how his work rate and concentrate has been pathetic.

Had a good run in LFC yet time better spent on Martin Kelly.

I'm surprised you two - and perhaps some others as well - are irritated by his man-to-man defending. That's one area where I'm still totally fine with him. I can't remember him getting caught out often or being dribbled past. But his marking in the box and challenging for aerial balls is often non-existent.

Agree with EE and Arq. Think his time has come to an end with us. Loved him in his prime but hopefully he's sold this summer. Will be 30 this year, and his performances do not justify his wages or even a starting spot in the team.

Kind of Reina, think Rodgers will act ruthlessly and get rid of Glen. I loved Reina as much as the next guy but it was evident his time with us was over.

Started 2013 okay, faded from February to end of the season with fatigue. Can't blame him really, was arguably our best player before that.

Started this season strongly, injured himself against United, comes back PLAYING INJURED, and he's on the decline? Come on now.

I honestly can't wait for him to come back fit and firing. Still one of our key players in the squad, and I think he and Sterling will dominate the right hand side of the pitch for us.

He just cant go back in the starting XI for me, he has to prove himself. More than often we are scoring goals, we are doing fine attacking wise.
But he is certainly had abilities in attacking sense, but if it seems he cant come back to his own, we should sell him the summer and Flano is trying to improve in attack but not lose the balance in defend, so for now Flano would do it for me.

Glen Johnson Empty Re: Glen Johnson

In his exclusive interview with the Daily Mail he says:

> Brendan Rodgers is a better man manager than Jose Mourinho

>On Rodgers from his time at Chelsea:

You could see he had aims to become a manager,’ he says. ‘He was travelling all over the place to pick up new techniques from coaches and obviously he was fortunate enough to work for Mourinho

Mourinho is one of the best in the world and I would never say he’s not because of what happened between us. But Brendan is different to Jose, he has his own mentality and is definitely one of the best.’

>On the title race and Liverpool have to be taken serious:

‘We believe we can win every game and I remember having that feeling at Chelsea,’ recalls the 29-year-old right back as he relaxes at Melwood after training. ‘The first year we won the title (2005) we could be losing 2-0 and still think we would win, and we usually would. That was confidence at its peak and we are moving towards that at Liverpool.

‘You have to believe you can win the league and until there are not enough points available we’ll keep thinking we can. We’ve got 10 cup finals, really, because we can’t afford to lose games or drop many points because Manchester City and Chelsea won’t.

‘City are favourites because they could field a second team that would be competitive, and you can’t compete with that. So we will need a bit of luck but we are definitely good enough.

>OH WHAT YOU LOOK AT THAT

Ultimately the strain of three injuries — the most concerning being a torn ankle ligament — became too great and he was forced to take five weeks off before returning to action last Saturday.

It was mentally tough because I want to perform how I’m used to and know I’m capable of doing, but my ankle was blocked so much that I couldn’t run properly. I couldn’t move it more than 90 degrees so when I was running I was basically limping.

‘Brendan was aware of the injuries but he was asking me to do a job for the team and every footballer wants to play.
‘At first I could play with the injuries but it got to the point where across all three it was affecting my performance and it was time to stop. Now I feel miles better. I’ve got that flexibility back in my ankle and I can run properly.’

>And to those that suggest he can't defend (rofl)

Johnson is not trying to make excuses and he accepts some of the criticism which has come his way is justified. However, he laughs off the suggestions of those who doubt his ability to defend.

‘I know I could have had a better season,’ he admits. ‘But you can’t play 12 years in the Premier League and not have a bad couple of weeks. I’m my biggest critic and I don’t need to be told when I’m playing badly.

‘You don’t get 49 England caps, play in World Cups and European Championships, you don’t win the Premier League twice, the League Cup twice and the FA Cup if you can’t defend. It’s that simple.

‘No disrespect, but you’d be in the Championship.’

Glen Johnson Empty Re: Glen Johnson

Post by iftikhar Fri 7 Mar 2014 - 8:08

There’s over a year left in his contract and it’s natural that in case of a player who is in the *bleep*-end of his career and had some recent bout of fitness issues, people will test the waters very carefully before wading in. I believe negotiation will commence between mid-July (after the WC, at the earliest) and end-September (after the transfer season, at the latest) provided Johnson himself doesn’t initiate any move (i.e. transfer request or show of intent regarding any interest from other clubs).

ATM Johnson has three options:
• Extend his contract by 1-2 years with a pay-cut. While the pay-cut wouldn’t make him a poverty player, he can play at a higher level (Champions League and title contention) in a familiar environment.
• Choose the likes of Inter, Galatasaray or RPL either through a transfer or as free-agent. He will enjoy a financial bonanza and may have the opportunity to play at high level. However, such late transplant is not always kind to players.
• Choose some mid-level club either through a transfer or as free-agent. However he will have to take a pay-cut and will not play to achieve something.

LFC/management knows they need a long-term replacement of Johnson with neither of the Wisdom, Kelly (still can’t give-up on him) or Flanagan ready to become starting choice and weighing their options as well:
• Johnson decides to move-on and a new RWB is bought this summer.
• Johnson decides to extend and the youth prospects get more opportunity & scrutiny to succeed him.
• Johnson leaves for free and either a youth player succeeds him or a new RWB is bought next summer.

I think both the parties are in comfortable situation and taking time to make the best decision.

Glen Johnson Empty Re: Glen Johnson

Post by Helmer Fri 7 Mar 2014 - 12:53

I think we need to calm down about this whole Gleno thing, we will surely try to manage our funds according to what targets we can get in this summer. If his wages of 110K/week are to be believed and it happens that we extend his contract by 2 more years, then according to my calculation it costs like 13-15m for three years. So if there is a thought that we buy a first team player this season, who can take his time to come into our starting XI since Gleno would be still here for another year. If we buy a young player (23-26) like for 7-8m or even 10m and keep him on 60k/week, it would certainly make sense after seeing the calculation for those three years and in addition to that we will have a player who will be with us for a long long time.
But as a RB I still like Gleno, I hope he stays here for more time and he is able to reach some kind of agreement with the club and although if he doesnt, it is fine with me, considering we buy a a good replacement.

Glen Johnson Empty Re: Glen Johnson

I want McAgger, Sepi, and the rest of the Liverpool section to call Brendan Rodgers deluded, contreversial, and whatever else was said when I said the exact same thing.

BeautifulGame wrote:
Exclusive: Rodgers says new contract for Johnson a priority this summer

Brendan Rodgers is on a mission to keep Glen Johnson at Anfield as the Liverpool FC boss insisted: “He’s one of the best full-backs in the world. RedAlert  Proud

The England international’s future is uncertain as he has just one year left on his contract.

However, Rodgers has revealed that talks over a new deal will take place this summer and the manager is hopeful an agreement can be reached.

Johnson has been hampered by injuries this season but was back to his best in Saturday’s stunning 6-3 triumph over Cardiff City.

We want to keep Glen here,” Rodgers told the ECHO.

“There is no question about that, especially now he’s in this form. He’s 29 and we feel that he has still got good years ahead of him.

“No contracts will be looked at until the summer but his will be a priority for us, especially if he continues in the form that he’s in.”

Johnson is one of the club’s top earners on around £110,000 per week but he turns 30 in August and it’s highly unlikely the Reds would be prepared to match those terms.

Whether the defender would be willing to accept a pay cut is also doubtful and Liverpool won’t want to run the risk of losing him for nothing in 2015.

Asked if Johnson’s age – coupled with his current salary – was likely to make discussions problematic, Rodgers said: “It just means you just have to sit, debate and discuss what’s best for the club and the player.

“The beauty of this is we want to keep Glen and Glen loves it here. We just need to find a solution which is good for both.

“If we can do that then the club will have a very good player for years to come.

“We have other players like young Jon Flanagan who only has one year left, while Jordan Henderson only has two years left.  They have been great and we want to look at those contracts.

“That’s something that will be for the summer. The players can do themselves no harm by continuing to play in the form they are in. The club will then take a close look at it.”

Rodgers believes Johnson’s performances for the title-chasing Reds in recent weeks have vindicated the decision to take him out of the firing line back in January.

The former Chelsea right-back missed six matches as he rested niggling ankle and groin injuries, which had hampered his form since the early stages of the campaign.

Johnson shone against Cardiff and Rodgers is looking for more of the same against Sunderland at Anfield tomorrow night.

“It’s been really difficult for Glen because he has wanted to give so much more,” Rodgers said.

“He has wanted to put himself out on the training pitch every day and play games but he was nowhere near 100% right. Of course when you put yourself out there you are getting judged.

“That is why we had to give him that time out.  There was no timeline on it. I just knew there was so much more to come from him.

“We needed to come together to find a way to get him back to his best. That meant taking him out in order for him to get back to that level.

“Now he’s feeling fresh and playing for the first time in ages without any injuries. Now you see that mobility and running power that he has.

“I thought Glen was outstanding against Cardiff. He showed his strength and power for Daniel Sturridge’s goal with how he executed that pass for Luis (Suarez).

“For our first goal, it was all about his running power without the ball and he put in a great cross for Luis.

“It’s important for me with how we play that the full-backs can get up, join in and make runs in behind. We are seeing now the player we all know Liverpool had – which is one of the best full-backs in the world.”

Post by Art Morte Wed 26 Mar 2014 - 9:42

I'm all for keeping Johnson, but if he is to keep his £110k / week salary, it can be a three-year contract at maximum and probably should actually be a little less than 110k.. I think Rodgers' answers also reflect this. "We just need to find a solution which is good for both." Meaning we won't keep him at any cost. Most likely there will be an extension, though.

He will be 30 in August and 31 by end of his current contract (mid 2015). By the start of next (2015-16) season he will be, most likely, a squad players. While it will be a good thing to have such an experienced player as back-up for up to two more seasons, spending over 11 million will be equally suicidal.

I think he should accept 90K & 80K for those two additional years respectively.

Lucas is a good cover for Gerrard in DM position and we will need him next season more with CL as well. He is back from a long term injury and playing in a different position so deserves some slack.

But Johnson has been digressing alarmingly .Need to find 2 quality fullbacks whether he is sold or not
