From what I heard he had a fake Dutch license (no time to check though atm).dostoevsky wrote:Agreed. The incredible thing however is that he's been fined for speeding on five previous occasions but they never realised he didn't have a driver's license.
The high fine comes from the fact that in Germany some fines are calculated on the daily rate of income (a "Tagessatz"), and he has to pay 90 "Tagessätze".

Interesting. Do you like this system?

^ Finland has the same system, that bigger fines are charged according to how much you earn. I think it's a good system as, say, a 100 euro fine doesn't really matter anything to rich people. When the fines are dependent on your earnings, you think twice before risking another speeding ticket.

Re: Not Worthy of a Thread Mk. II
those 'Tagessätze' are not what you get as basic fines, but what you get once you've done something more severe so you're actually judicially sentenced.
I.e, if you drive a little bit too fast and are caught by speed cameras (like Reus obviously was a few times in the last years), you just pay a basic fine, say 60€ if you're 10km/h too fast, 150€ if you're 20 over the limit or something like that.
That's also how he was apparently able to get away with driving without license, you just get the bill sent to you (the registered owner of the car) and if you pay it's done.
I wasn't aware you could actually register a car without a drivers license, but then why wouldn't you.
Also it means that Reus never was very far over the limit, because else he would've received penalty points in a central database to his name on top of the fine, and I guess then they'd realized he has no license, though I'm not even sure of that.
However Reus now was stopped while speeding and then it turned out he was driving without license all this time and during his previous violations.
So now this is a more serious offense, guess it went before some kind of court and that's why he got the 'Tagessätze'.

It's a great concept, a fine of a few hundred euros would have been meaningless to Reus.
Also thank you to Hans for the background information.

Lost a lot of respect for Reus after reading that. Not only is he driving without a licence, he was actually caught speeding multiple times. Just wow.

Re: Not Worthy of a Thread Mk. II
A 2+ ton vehicle is quite the weapon. I can't even imagine what went through his head when he took a car and drove it out for the first time without any experience whatsoever and no one on the passenger seat who could put on the brakes if necessary. Traffic in Germany is quite dense as well, especially in Nordrhein-Westfalen. I remember my first steps with a car. Even after getting my licence it was still an unusual feeling to judge oncoming traffic and take over other cars on country roads and stuff like that. A lot can go wrong very quickly. The fact that he got several speeding tickets further confirms that he doesn't care too much about his environment.

Re: Not Worthy of a Thread Mk. II
Yes you're right. I'm just asking as I never know when you're serious
from what I read though, he took the lessons but didn't complete the test and then decided to just go on driving, so I don't know wether he'd be necessarily worse at driving than someone who made the test.
And once you're driving, a speeding ticket can happen easily, especially if you're gifted one of those German cars where driving at anything below 180 km/h feels unnatural.
It still is a very stupid and irresponsible thing to do, true.

Re: Not Worthy of a Thread Mk. II
And in the night from Thursday to Friday, Schalke's Christian Clemens had a bad accident when his car got hit by a gust of wind and pushed into the guide board of the Autobahn. Fortunately he "only" got a shock and a whiplash injury and seemingly no one else got hurt but a couple of other cars by debris. Looks like the Schalke players are driving rather reckless despite having a drivers license (some others crashed their cars, too, recently).

I bet the guys in the Premier League would love to drive their super sportscars as fast as the guys here in Germany.

Not a hurricane, but very strong winds where sometimes gusts can get very violent, especially on the part of the Autobahn where Clemens got hit (I happen to know that part pretty well as I drive there rather often).

Re: Not Worthy of a Thread Mk. II
Do managers in England get to celebrate the holidays with their families? A few days ago, David Moyes said that 2014 was the first year he got to celebrate Christmas with his family in 16 years. He said that yesterday (December 25), the players trained for a little bit and then were given the rest of the days off.
Has there been anything similar said by other managers in the Premier League?
