Hull owner Assem Allam has told fans "they can die as soon as they want" in response to protests about his plans to change the club's name.

Allam, who took over in 2010, infuriated some supporters with his idea to rebrand the club Hull Tigers.

The Hull fans have formed a campaign group called City Till We Die.

But Allam told the Independent: "They can die as soon as they
want, as long as they leave the club for the majority who just want to watch good football."

What a lovely owner to have. Here's hoping we absolutely demolish them this afternoon!

Really idiotic thing for an owner to say... He should be fined by the league.

But, to the original issue..aren't the fans overreacting a bit? At first l thought he was going to totally change the brand and name.. which then, l would understand the outrage..But all he is going to do is change it from Hull City AFC to Hull City Tigers... lts really not any different. He's not even taking city out of the name, just adding tigers. People pretty much called them that already anyway

Do Hull City fans know anything about the business behind how clubs run? Fans just support the team, that's all they do. They are not knowledgeable about football-related things even if it's about questioning the manager's tactics. Best to leave these things to people with credentials. Perhaps the Hull City owner sees a huge profitable deal for the club if they change their name. I'm sure Hull City fans won't want to get relegated.

I followed that name change thing in the UK press a bit. From what I gathered, the Hull City owner decided to change the name after he got into a row with the city to acquire the stadium freehold, which the city declined. He was obviously miffed about that and decided to figure out something to get back at them.

His explanation that he wanted to change the name for commercial reasons was based on a study about the best names for new stock floats that hat pretty much nothing to do with how football club names work (in fact, according to this study, for example Manchester United would have been one of the worst names for a successful float XD).

So it seems that this name change looks more and more like a wanton act to show the people who has the power in the club.

BTW, here's one of his quotes:  "My dislike for the word 'City' is because it is common. I want the club to be special. It is about identity. 'City' is a lousy identity. Hull City Association Football Club is so long."

I guess Manchester City FC is a lousy identity, too, then

Disgusting comments, ofcourse the GL glory hunters who 'picked' a club and see their club more like a franchise wouldn't have a problem with this. Commercial interests? FFS this is Hull, a rugby town, never gonna be the New York Yankee's. The FA has ignored the issues of club ownership for years, changing club names, even colours(cardiff) at the whims of a sugar daddy is disgusting.

What do people expect when they let people buy clubs? Of course not everybody can be a nice guy right?
Feel sorry for the fans but tbh the problem isn't the owner being a *bleep* but the club being owned by one man.

l'd say he has a point in terms of, ltll be harder to market and promote the team with its current name, with Man City in the same league. They kind of have the monopoly on the "city" name as far as branding recognition goes. There are other teams with city in the name, but they are often referred to by their other name. Like Swansea and Norwich for example. But hull is a name that kind of short and doesn't really stand on its own, so it doesn't quite work as much..lf that makes any sense.

But then l guess the counter point would be if the owner didn't like the name or branding then why buy that team and not a different one he thought had more international appeal or potential.

Excellent post. Too many people on here simply do not understand that football clubs mean to some people than just the sport.

Hull City owner Assem Allam has reiterated his intention to walk away from the Premier League club if his proposed name change is unsuccessful.

Allam is attempting to rebrand the club as Hull Tigers in order to increase their commercial appeal to potential sponsors, but the Football Association is set to block his proposal.

In a statement, the governing body said that, at a meeting last Wednesday, its membership committee had made the recommendation to reject the request to the FA council after "consultation with stakeholders within and outside of the game".

The statement added that a full vote would be taken as planned on April 9 and that Hull were able to respond with a new submission, having been sent the written reasons.

Allam later insisted once again that he would walk away from Hull if his plan failed, but moved to deny he would liquidate the club.

While also admitting he would now ask Hull's season ticket holders to vote on the issue, he said: "We will announce a ballot this week, and we will challenge the decision.

"If the FA does not allow our plan, we will walk away, put it on the market to sell the club. We would not put it into liquidation; there is a lot of money at stake. I will get my money when I sell."

Allam's quest has been met with a furious response from supporters and led them into a war of words with the owner.

But the Football Supporters' Federation has praised their campaign, called City Till We Die, and believes the right decision has been made.

FSF chief executive Kevin Miles said: "This is undoubtedly the right decision and credit should go both to the FA and to Hull City fans, who led a tremendous campaign.

"The fans' groups and fanzines who came together under the City Till We Die banner have protected their club's heritage and 110-year-old name with great dignity.

"The FA's decision should also serve as a warning to other owners - such fundamental changes to a club's identity should not be made without the support of the fans."

Allam's son Ehab restated the case for a change as recently as last week, pointing out his family had invested £74m in the club.

"We have nothing left to give and this is the reason why the club has to become financially self-sustainable," he wrote in a letter to the Hull Daily Mail.

"Currently there are six teams in the Premier League with 'City' in their name and, with the exception of Manchester City, all of those clubs are in a similar league position to us, and playing to similar sized crowds.

"We need something that makes us stand out from the pool of teams we find ourselves in when it comes to attracting potential international sponsors, who are simply hoping to use the Premier League, and its global audience, to advertise."
