This...all others did it before so we are doing it now mentality is pathetic and any one who trying to justifying it are pathetic too.

Guess back in the day pedophilia was normal thing does that mean it is ok to practice it now? what a barbaric mentality some are showing here.

We are in 2014 ,end off. Anything happening should be measured according to the current time not some 60 years ago BS.

90% of the countries provide better living condition to their Imigrant workers than Qatar...that is the real problem.

900 people dead..Laughing .inbefore everybody did it before so we are doing now mentality LOL..absolutely hilarious way to justify that shit country's wrong doings.

lol...  reading comprehension dude, as usual.

The point is that you can't conveniently just use issues that exist in Qatar as a justification not to have a WC there when China, Russia, South Africa, Brazil, etc. have similar issues or worse.  It's being hypocritical.

If you want to discuss the problem... great!  It should be discussed and addressed.  But regarding exclusion... then you should look at human rights issues everywhere and exclude all countries that suffer from human rights problems... which again, include China, Russia, South Africa, Brazil, etc.

If you do apply double standards, then it reeks of something that i don't want to get into since it will likely offend most Laughing

Who said all others are not getting criticized any way?

The likes of China are criticized and despised for their inhumane laws and acts...any way we are talking about World cup hosting and which other country with bid has a system in which workers passport is held (seriously think about that ) so that they can never complain, leave the job or even leave that shithole country?

It is daylight slavery and in 2014 i just cant believe these things are still happening. Pathetic countries and pathetic culture.

Date is a record of time, not a unit of morality. Islamic calendar has us in 1435 by their unit of measure so saying "It's 2014 FFS" means nothing.

but they still get events like the Olympics and the WC... no problem.  I don't think you can mix social/political issues with sports...  they really have nothing to do with each other.

Many middle east countries are trying to modernize and they are basically starting from nothing.  I commend them.  It's not easy when you have conflicts between the traditional cultures and the modern world... but they're figuring it out.  Much better than the oil rich countries in Africa for example (like Nigeria and Algeria) where the ruling elite does little to nothing for the people and steal most of it.  Is it perfect?  No.  But as they modernize, they will need to correct the issues to take the next step in fully joining modern society and reaping the full benefits of such membership...  you see, that's the key:  if change is required in exchange for significant economic benefit, people will make the changes.  That's the way you can realistically expect countries to evolve = offer economic incentive to do so.  Without incentive, people seldom do anything unfortunately.

I think in the long run the Nigeria and the Algeria's will be better off though because the native population are still expected to contribute in a meaningful way in everyday life.

This is something you literally dont see in the vast majority of the gulf nations. Not to repeat stereotypes, but gulf arabs are lazy. They literally will sit around at work and wait for foreign nationals to do the work. I'm not alone in observing this phenom either. I dont know if its the oppressive heat that adds to this laid back culture, but it is there. Sure these higher jobs pay foreigners a lot, but it really speaks on the culture overall.

Eventually oil will run out... which is why these middle eastern rulers have invested so heavily on making their countries develop alternative economies so that they can sustain a high standard of living even if oil goes away.  That's the key here.  Algeria and Nigeria are doing absolutely nothing to diversify themselves... so no, they will not be better off and they are headed down a path of disaster unless they stop relying on oil.

As far as the "lazy citizenry" you're referring to.  I think you're generalizing.  Yes, the government largely subsidizes the lifestyle of its citizens... but when the time comes that they can no longer subsidize them, there's a dynamic economy in their country for them to transition to.  Also, many of the youth from these countries are getting educated in the west and have ambitions.  What you are describing is becoming less and less prevalent.

You have to realize that the % of nationals is very low when compared to the total residency of these countries now.  It's like Monaco for example tbh...

If the middle east was not a threat to the west economically, you wouldn't see such adverse reaction...  like you see in GL.  Back when i was a teenager, you had similar backlash against Japan and then China later on.

Its mostly Vietnam and no it is not a slave labor like in the middle eastern countries.. No body is helding their passport nor are they unable to quit the job. There is a world of difference if you think consciously.

Human race reached this stage by learning from their mistakes. USA banned slavery , they couldve just let the system continue and take advantage of the slaves but they realized from their mistakes and corrected it. While some middle eastern countries despite being historically slave traders they are still following some of the elements of those old slavery not even bothered with it and citizens are perfectly fine with it because it benefits them..''The world is a hell so i ll become Satan'' moto is for losers...thats exactly what some are conveying in this thread.

Just so people stop talking out of their arse, here's an article describing the countries with the most slave labor:

And here's the global slavery index:

but these workers know that they'll have to surrender their passports upon arrival.

they knew the conditions of work beforehand and made the choice to go work over there.

Absolutely not true.Often they are cheated by agents who lie to them about the job exploit their desperation due to poverty and then forced to work under these conditions until their contract runs and passport is returned.

Plenty of indians who were promised jobs like drivers/electricians etc and taken to Qatar or Soudi and forced to work as labours in these building or as house maids in horrific living conditions until their contract period is over even if they want to return.

When the US was modernizing itself in the 20s and 30s, i hope i don't have to tell you 1000s of people that died in the coal mines and the building projects in large cities. Even when slavery was abolished in the US... it never went away until the civil rights movement of the 60s brought the issue to light.

The UK... should i bring up the plight of the Irish?

How about the white terror in Spain?

The colonial impact on Africa how it has led to the current atrocities is well documented as well.

Are the living conditions and mortality rates better in the favelas all across South America?

So before you point the finger at someone else, point it at yourself first. None of it is excusable. But the hypocrisy is unreal here... Qatar is going through its industrial revolution and there have always been issues with a hyper rate of growth.

how the hell is it hypocritical? can we please stop this false equivalency of "bad shit happens elsewhere so we can't criticise qatar"? first of all, this is a football forum not a human rights forum, and the world cup is a direct reason why qatar specifically is in this discussion and as far as i know, 1900s UK and 1960s USA were never chosen to host the biggest sporting event in the world... secondly, i'd hazard a guess that the majority of this forum wasn't alive to criticise the human rights issues during the goddamn gilded age... nobody is using that as an example now because it's already happened, it's history, and we can't undo it... all we can do is learn from it, which the likes of qatar are ignoring

"but white people did it 150 years ago" is not a justification for human rights abuse

Qatar is shit. The fact that it's been proved that they got the host rights due to bribery of Bin Homam (is he in jail yet?), should be enough to have it all revoked. Not to mention the more important stuff like human rights. Hell, Qatar hosted AFC cup in 2011 and it was the worst and ahittiest tournament since I started following Asian Cup back in 1996. Just a soulless place. It's like getting paid to have sex with a 70 year old rich woman with fake tits. Disgusting

Post by che Thu Mar 20, 2014 5:36 pm

how about you give some actual thought to analyzing this table

for starters, the other bids for 2022 were from USA, australia, south korea and japan, who place 134th, 138th, 137th and 130th respectively on the ranking... qatar is 96th

further, qatar is preceded only by a) subsaharan africa, b) indian subcontinent, c) poor south american nations and d) eastern europe, regions widely viewed as shitholes and entirely unsuitable for hosting the fifa world cup

then there is the whole issue of methodology, which of course the website doesn't fully disclose... did they account for the better law enforcement networks in european countries that lead to better detection of human trafficking? did they account for nuances in labour exploitation, as in the difference between "you'll be paid $2 a day or you can leave" and "you'll be paid $1 a day, and we'll keep your passport, and you'll probably die on the job"?

data interpretation is a wonderful skill

edit: reading further into it, what an absolute shitshow of a research this is

a review of the public record, also referred to as secondary source information – published reports from governments, the investigations of non-governmental and international organizations, and journalistic reports across all media

straight off the bat, that can be influenced by level of government control over their own reports and media access... that's a massive red flag right there, but not even the biggest one because...

Data from representative random sample surveys (meaning they are collected randomly and thus can reliably represent the larger population) – they yield a statistical estimate of the prevalence of modern slavery based on first-hand reports by individuals.

what the absolute *bleep*? they asked people how prevalent slavery is in their country?
i'm doing a masters degree now, if i proposed this as a methodology for my thesis i'd be laughed out of tertiary education and forced to have "dumbass" tattooed across my forehead
