Fifa sees the profit in a game of three thirds at Qatar World Cup
So after the abortive winter World Cup idea, now the game of three thirds as Fifa seeks to square the circle of holding the tournament in a desert. Michael Beaven of the engineering firm Arup Associates claimed on Tuesday that 2022 World Cup matches may be played in three 30-minute periods. He was saying it is necessary to prevent player injuries if temperatures top 32C.
Although Fifa denied it had discussed the matter, it is strongly possible talks will take place over the next 11 years since the three-thirds idea would generate many more millions for broadcasters in ad revenue. And what is good for broadcasters is good for Fifa.
US broadcasters earned $213m from 48 minutes of ad breaks during the Super Bowl, which has four quarters. Two "half-times" in a three-period World Cup match would create a lot of potential space for the adverts, thus raising broadcast-rights values. One senior television executive, who is far from enamoured at the idea, said: "I can't think of any other rationale for it than a commercial motive."
But if Fifa is going to introduce it, it must change the laws of the game after almost 150 years, which would have a further-reaching effect than just the World Cup. There is the facility for the Qatar 2022 organisers to change the format of games during their competition under football's Law 7. "The match lasts two equal periods of 45 minutes unless mutually agreed between the referee and the two teams," it says. "Any agreement to alter the duration of play must be made before the start of play and must comply with competition rules."
Regrettably for Fifa, Qatar 2022 seems to have been stung by the furore and on Thursday it issued a categorical denial of Beaven's claims. "Statements on this subject made by Mr Beaven from Arup are without any foundation," it said in a statement. But then holding the World Cup in a desert was never going to be easy.
Even though FIFA are denying it at the moment does anyone honestly think FIFA will let go an opportunity to make money regardless of how stupid it may seem.

But Qatar 2022 released a statement which said: "Splitting the games has not been discussed at any time.
"All 64 games will be played in carbon neutral cooled stadiums in two halves of 45 minutes, as per regulations."
The statement added: "Statements on this subject made yesterday by Mr Beaven from Arup are without any foundation.
"Representatives from Arup are not spokespeople for Qatar 2022."

^ Exactly. People are openly criticizing when it's still 11 years away.
I think some people are butthurt, plain and simple.

So far the Qatar choice has been a disaster.
First it has been publically said by FIFA officials that Qatar bought the World cup. And now they are trying to find a way to ruin the event to avoid the heat of the summer.
Moving it to winter, splitting it in 3 half times in total violation of the rule of the game.
It's in 11 years. That's a big amount of time to give the organization to a real football country.

I would like football to be played in three thirds, 30 minutes each. Not just for the WC but for all games.

It's not a bad idea but it resembles the time structure of American football so I reckon it would be met with great hostility.

I dont see the difference between that and using technology to aid in arbitration to be honest. I would say that playing in three thirds takes away from the spirit of the game much less than goal-line, video technology and such.

So far you have done nothing to back that claim up.

Innocent until proven guilty.

Qatari officials themselves denied those claims.

Why was Qatar awarded the WC again?

Great, clear plan, amazing infrastructure, and their aim to turn many of their disadvantages into strong advantages. Even trying to calm political issues for when the WC starts just shows how committed they are to the cause.

Re: Fifa sees the profit in a game of three thirds at Qatar World Cup
Following recent media reports, FIFA would like to clarify the following: there has never been any discussion at FIFA regarding the possibility of introducing three periods of 30 minutes for matches at the FIFA World Cup™, or at any other competition.
Football matches are played over two periods of 45 minutes. Any modification of this rule would have to be discussed by the International Football Association Board (IFAB), and it has never been a topic of discussion.

Re: Fifa sees the profit in a game of three thirds at Qatar World Cup
Old news but Impressive...
Aspire Academy from Qatar beat Manchester United 5-1 in the Premier final of the Milk Cup
Ibrahima Drame's first-half hat-trick helped Qatari club Aspire hammer Manchester United 5-1 in Friday's Milk Cup Premier Final in Ballymena.
The Senegal native bagged a hat-trick by the 25th minute and Pabe Babacar added the fourth goal on 56.
Jack Barmby pulled a goal back for outclassed United before Souleyman Kone hit Aspire's fifth goal on 64.
Aspire's superb display was a fitting way to round off another superb Milk Cup tournament on the north coast.
The Middle Eastern club handed United a footballing lesson in what was the Old Trafford outfit's heaviest defeat in a Milk Cup decider since a 6-0 thrashing by Paraguay 10 years ago.
Frank Cedric tormented Manchester United left-back Gyliano Van Velzen as his runs and crosses set up Drame for the opening goals on seven minutes and 22.
Drame then completed his hat-trick on 25 with a superb glancing header over United's Donegal-born keeper Joseph Coll after an Innocent Shoja cross.
Cedric should have extended Aspire's lead after the break and United's first attempt on goal didn't come until Mats Daehli fired straight at keeper Ebenezer after 50 minutes.
Babacar struck Aspire's fourth goal on 56 and while Barmby pulled a goal back for United on the hour, Kone hit the Qatari club's fifth six minutes from time to emphasise their dominance.
