Match-fixing: Champions League tie played in England 'was fixed'

A Champions League tie played in England is one of 380 matches across Europe investigators say was fixed.

European police did not reveal the identity of the match they believe was corrupt in England.

But Europol did say that they had uncovered an organised crime syndicate based in Asia that was co-ordinating the operation.

Some 425 match officials, club officials, players and criminals are suspected of being involved.

Europol, which has been investigating for 18 months, said suspected matches included World Cup and European Championship qualifiers, two Champions League ties and "several top football matches in European leagues".

Criminals wagered 16m euros on rigged matches and made eight million Euros in profits, Europol say.

Payments of two million Euros are thought to have been paid to those involved. The biggest payment to an individual was 140,000 Euros, according to investigators.

Europol believes a crime syndicate based in Asia was liaising with criminal networks throughout Europe. It believes match-fixing has taken place in 15 countries and 50 people have so far been arrested.

Officials said they feared this was the "tip of the iceberg".

Rob Wainwright, director of Europol, said: " This is the work of a suspected organised crime syndicate based in Asia and operated with criminal networks around Europe.

"It is clear to us this is the biggest-ever investigation into suspected match-fixing in Europe. It has yielded major results which we think have uncovered a big problem for the integrity of football in Europe.

"We have uncovered an extensive criminal network."

Europol gave the details on Monday at a news conference in The Hague, Netherlands.

'Europol' say that it was a UEFA Champions League game that was fixed in England in the "last 3-4 years". Chelsea vs Barcelona? Arsenal vs Milan? Tottenham vs Milan? hmm

next on the list investigate uefa and fifa please. u can't tell me the 2022 world cup that's gonna be staged in qatar didn't involve bribing ? the "practice draw" ended up being excactly the same as the "official" draw for the champions league k.o stages and uefa just expect the public to buy into that like nothing happened.

Barca red card betting? hmm

That would sound viable in the sense that you'd only need to bribe the referee, probably.

Would be very very interesting to hear which matches are under investigation.

If Interpol is involved and Interpol head is making it public, you can bet heads are going to role and it is major... they don't mess around and they do not spend money where it doesn't bring results. Interpol is relatively underfunded and they need to pick their battles carefully.

Well, in Germany we had our most recent betting scandal with referee Robert Hoyzer being convicted in 2005 and sentenced to serve 2 years and 5 months in prison for manipulating twelve 2nd BL matches, some DFB-Pokal and some Regionalliga matches. I'm curious who is the next on the list.

From what I've been reading Germany, Austria, Slovenia, UK, Hungary, Netherlands and Turkey all implicated but not Italy? hmm

Also this is the only match Argentina is involved in. The Hungarian ref added 12 extra minutes to the U20 match and ended up giving us a penalty for a 1-0 win.

According to German media the ome definitely known CL-tie is:
- VSC Debrecen vs ACF Fiorentina

Two Euro League ties are known:
- FC Basel vs CSKA Sofia
- Aalborg vs Sarajevo

Sauce

The article mentions that the mentioned fixed ties in Germany are about 70 4th flight matches that were already made public a while back in the German match-fixing trials in 2011 against Sapina.

Sure, a semifinal of the CL is the best game to match fix for betting purposes.
