It started at a local level, they made the PL a big deal when SKY first bought the rights, they built excitement which meant fans were willing to fill the stadiums. They made the timings at watch-able hours for the rest of the world. That lead to money and better players which in turn led to better results domestically and abroad. Slowly but surely it became more and more popular as well as more willing to accept foreign investors who wanted a slice of this growing pie.

Good marketing can make anything popular provided it's decent which the PL is. But don't piss in my ear and tell me it's raining by saying that the football itself is what attracted people

#1 It is not corrupt i.e. the betting if you bet in Serie A well you never know, liga is mehdrid or Barca with ridiculously low odds to gain a significant profit.

#2 End to end fast pace football, its exciting in most games no two ways about it, sure sometimes its not the best but it has excitement.

#3 Good competition.

#4 Less racism & more multicultural teams.

English language and what comes with it. Like, look at our awesome GoalLegacy forum. I wouldn't be here if this wasn't in English and I wouldn't follow a league if I couldn't read 90% of what's reported about it in the media.

Also that the BPL has the most money so you're bound to have a lot of good players there and they seized the global TV coverage opportunity very well, too. You can now watch games on the Internet as much as you like, but for the most part of the 90's you watched what was on the telly.

The PL is sort of like Manny Pacquiao.

Incredibly fast and energetic and while it never will be the most technical nor have the best tactics, its hugely entertaining and open.

they managed to push the barca- moscow game telecast to some stupid channel so that ten action could show united- gala via massive twitter fest. that support

The language thing isn't about understanding what the players are saying on the pitch (Highburied) or what language the commentating is (Zealous), it's about being able to follow what the media writes and broadcasts about the league.

Edit. Also about being able to talk about it in English with other football fans around the world.

The PL it's obviously the most popular in the world because the British Empire. Where is the PL the most popular league? In India, Australia, the united States of America, the escandinavian counrties and some other asian countries. Most of this countries were part of the British Empire except the escandinavian countries (very strong relationship with england) and other Asian countries (although in many of those countries England hand commercial bases like Hong Kong).

This is the reason why the EPl is the most popular in this countries. When they turned to watch football, it was just natural for them to go and watch football from the country they have the most ties and which they understand the language of the players, the pundits, the media, etc.

The funny thing is why didn't england expand football to their colonies and only other sports like cricket, rugby, etc? That's a really good question.

Spanish is an important language and where Spanish is spoken, La Liga is definitely the most foreign league viewed (all South and Central America), but differently thatn the ex-British Empire countries, in these countries there are strong national leagues, and the fans already follow them, but as their second choice, they mostly follow La liga.

British Empire is older than Premier League (since 92).

I don't think language (and by some extension, the legacy of empire) is the primary reason for EPL's popularity, but I do think it is a strong reinforcement. The global reach of English and Spanish helps make EPL & La Liga more accessible. Of course there are commentaries on these leagues in other languages, and you can find commentaries in English, Spanish, Arabic, etc., of Ligue 1, Serie A, and so on. But in this period of TV rights and Internet streaming, discussion boards, etc., the pull of a fluent/native language remains strong I think.

Personal aside: When I was a bit younger and the Internet broadened my horizons to following the game I'd loved since childhood, I had not grown up supporting any particular club - but when presented with the task of settling on a league & a club to follow most closely, what edged me towards EPL (where I soon followed Arsenal) over Germany (where I probably would have followed Frankfurt Eintracht) was the fact that I'd forgotten whatever German I'd learned as a kid. And if language has nothing to do with it, you'd have to wonder why the Bundesliga (which tends to have the most unpredictable seasons & title races these days, and also highest goals-per-game ratio) doesn't get included in discussions as "best" or "most exciting" league that often.

But language alone can't explain it, otherwise MLS and the Latin American leagues would get greater exposure outside of their own hemisphere. I think the pace & excitement of EPL and the extremely high levels of technique in La Liga are what make those the elite leagues in the current period.

Also, money. But part of how & why the leagues accrue this money is related to reasons above.

if you actually want to get into seriously supporting a football club, english teams are the easiest way to go through the huge amount of coverage in the club's native language... if i didn't have basic knowledge of spanish i'd have very little understanding of what's going on at vcf, relying on other people sucks tbh, journalists even more so than other fans

That is true about 99% football fans in SA regardless of which team they support not just united.

Don't buy into the high energy entertainment argument. In my experience it's hugely overrated and I don't find the games that much more interesting.

It's the money, which leads to competition.

Where were the premierfaces before Roman took over Abramovich? There must have been a few, but nowhere near as much as later. Before then only two clubs competed for the title recently, and only one consistently. Chelsea came in, bought a ton of stars, and they suddenly became "the most competitive league in the world". Enter Man City, now you have 4 sides capable of competing, all with exciting players and can do so consistently in the CL. Without Chelsea this would have never happened.

Three names helped the EPL turn La Liga and Serie A fan's heads

Henry. Van Nistelrooy. Beckham. Those three probably did more for the PL than anyone else

Marketing and Language are just the two components among many which makes it the best league in the world. No one in Asia watches a Stoke vs Bolton game just because it's in the "best league"
