I don't care how bias this sounds after Pirlo's season he could have won it just as equally as CR, Messi etc.

MVP of the Eurocup in a year where no player dominated club football. It was predictable. Stop crying about it, this is highly subjective and we'll all have different opinions, but this is not a travesty.

Is there a player that clearly shone above the rest in club football? Drogba, Cristiano, Messi, Pirlo, and Yaya all had a claim for best club football performer of the season, but none of them was clear and far ahead of any other one.

I think you could make arguments for some of these players to be definitive winners
I would drop Yaya and Drogba, both had spectacular seasons, just not ballon d'or seasons
Anyways,
Cristiano scored a mess of goals for Real Madrid, was one of Portugal's best players in a semi-final making team in the Euro and won la liga
Messi broke the individual record for goal scoring, led the champions league in scoring but obviously didn't play in the Euro
Pirlo was the focal point of an undefeated team in Italy, led Italy to the final of the Euro but did not play in the champions league
But, ok, I do see your point

Messi's record-breaking season is undermined because he didn't win a major trophy (other than the CWC, which no one seems to care about). Yeah, if you weren't going to give it to Messi or Ronaldo because that would have been too predictable, and wanted to give it to someone else, despite that they both deserved it, then you should have given it to Pirlo.
