Luis Suarez (The Spanish One) Pirlo Superior to Xavi
European champions Spain meet Italy in their Euro 2012 opener on Sunday, with both men expected to play key roles at PGE Arena in Gdansk, Poland.
Suarez, who has coached Spain and Inter Milan, helped his country win the tournament in 1964.
“I have to point out first that Italy is my home, but my heart is Spanish,” Suarez told La Gazzetta dello Sport. “These are two champions with a great sense of positioning and know how to pick the right moment to start a move. They both have experience and technique.
“They are similar players, but in my view Pirlo has more of a range, can spread the play more and seek the longer passes. It’s true Xavi gets fewer passes wrong, but that’s because he plays them short and at most will pass 20 metres to the wings, so there are fewer risks. Andrea aims for more difficult passes and that brings with it the risk of getting it wrong sometimes.
“At the end of the day, I think Pirlo is a more complete player than Xavi. Andrea strokes the ball better, which is why he’s also better with free kicks and scores a few goals. He’s also more determined in the tackle, whereas Xavi is light and just uses his positioning to defend,” concluded 77-year-old Suarez.
KEEP IN MIND I am not giving my opinion since I love both equally and are heroes to me alike. Just adding flame to the already fading embers of this lame discussion.

Well if we are talking about complete midfielders, then neither of them comes close to Iniesta or Gerrard.

Ahhh Stevie G, Jack of all trades, master of non. Please don't put him in this list of all time greats.

Unbelievable. Gerrard?????????????????? You must be kidding. And, though it's close I would take Pirlo or Xavi before Iniesta. They can control a team.

Re: Luis Suarez (The Spanish One) Pirlo Superior to Xavi
Zinedine Zidane believes Liverpool's Steven Gerrard is currently the best player in the world, eclipsing Lionel Messi of Barcelona and Manchester United's Cristiano Ronaldo. The former France and Real Madrid midfielder saw Gerrard score twice against his old club in the Champions League during the week and said teams need players like Gerrard to be the "engine room" for the flair players to thrive, comparing the Liverpool captain to his former team-mate Claude Makelele.
"Is he the best in the world? He might not get the attention of [Lionel] Messi and Ronaldo but, yes, I think he just might be," Zidane said. "If you don't have a player like Steven Gerrard, who is the engine room, it can affect the whole team.
"When we were winning league titles and European Cups at Real, I always said Claude Makelele was our most important player. There is no way myself, [Luis] Figo or Raúl would have been able to do what we did without Claude and the same goes for Liverpool and Gerrard.
"He has great passing ability, can tackle and scores goals, but most importantly he gives the players around him confidence and belief. You can't learn that – players like him are just born with that presence."
2009 but...

Re: Luis Suarez (The Spanish One) Pirlo Superior to Xavi
That you guys find Gerrard inclusion so funny just proves my point. Gerrard was one of the most complete midfielders in the game in his prime but I dont rate him equal to any of the 3. I used him as an example to show that the most complete player is not always the better player..

I agree with the OP, Pirlo is a fantastic all round player, Xavi is close, but Pirlo is a different class all together, he can defend, give brilliant short and long passes, has a great shot and is a set piece specialist.

Re: Luis Suarez (The Spanish One) Pirlo Superior to Xavi
Wow the downplay of Gerard in these forums.
At his prime days he was one of the most useful midfielders on could have in his team.

Re: Luis Suarez (The Spanish One) Pirlo Superior to Xavi
pirlo is certainly my favourite midfielder post Zidane. but i wouldnt argue over a Xavi Vs Pirlo comparison, both are great, its just peronal preference really... even Gerrard is worth to be mentioned imo
personally i would also throw wesley sneijder in the discussion.
