Disclaimer: I did not watch this match as it conflicted with my undergrad graduation (woo!).

Upon learning the result, at first I was like "football lost" :vagi:.

But then I actually felt happy for these players. The CL has been their goal since the Roman era started and it has always evaded them. This is probably their last chance at winning it for the likes of Lampard, Terry and Drogba. They might have won it in a style I'm not particularly fond of, and it was very close. Matches like this should not be decided by penalties but given a golden goal, I feel. But I feel happy for the individual players that have.

Peter Shilton would have saved it as well.

Look big keepers make Big saves. Both Iker and Buffon have made saves from bullets headers in big tournaments before, I'm pretty confident they would have saved that.

Straw man logic. I don't have to be a five star chef to know whether something tastes nice.

Neuer could have saved that, really it was a super weak goal to concede even if the header was good. He was right there.

Congratulations Alfred. Very Happy

I really think you're underestimating the power of that header, it's easy to say others would have saved it but in the end Neuer was one of the least culpable Bayern players in my eyes.

The issue isn't Neuer, it's Drogba heading an equaliser whilst completely unchallenged.

People are really downplaying the speed at which the ball came at Neuer. Add to the fact that it was right in front of him (as opposed to either side) meant he could only fall backwards into the net attempting to save it

I'd pay money to see Buffon or Iker in that exact same situation and see how much better they'd fare

Glorious Laughing anyone who thinks any GK past or present would have saved that clearly know nothing about football..... the ball was passed him before he coudl react which is why his touch just helped the ball on its way.

Impossible to save..... if this was Casillas or Buffon or anyone else you would agree Laughing

Yeah because that was a CL final. Look man big game, you need to make the big saves. Iker has never lost a final and always has a Hollywood save in every one he has been in. Buffon is just as accomplished and Neuer has exactly zero of these big saves in finals.

And yes they would have saved it, pretty easily.

I think it came at pace, it was not an easy save.

Still think Casillas would save it though because he's pulled off bigger miracles...but Neuer is not at all to blame for the goal.

Perhaps he couldve been a little further out, whatever nitpicking,I don't really care.

that was a bullet header from 6 yards, come on. Neuer tried his best, but you can't say that gigi and casillas can save them easily. That's utter bullshit. Maybe with some luck and a little anticipation, but with that surprise and short time reaction, luck is a huge factor.

Blame goes to the defenders. Zonal or man marking, they didn't mark didier well enough.

Yeah, i'm a hater because I think a GK shouldn't be beaten at his near post. Rolling Eyes

I really couldn't give a shit if it was Casillas, Buffon, Seaman, Van Der Sar or whoever. I expected Neuer to save that as he had already anticipated that Drogba was the intended target. If you watch it again, you can clearly see Neuer watching Drogba's movement and preparing himself to close of the near post.

Boateng gets just as much blame. Instead of trying to contest in the air with Drogba, he just lets him stroll right past and get a free header. Joke defending right there.

Thanks Z and Dost Very Happy

The penalty we should be talking about is Robben's miss... he must be feeling like shit right now.

Also, why put a dutch player to take the penalty with so many Germans in your team? :vagi:

There's quite a difference between stating that a shot might have been saved by someone else and attributing blame to the goalkeeper.

There's a reason that those saves are labelled as great saves and there's a grey area between costing your side and being unable to pull off a miracle save. Even though it looks similar to Buffon's shot, Drogba's shot was closer to his body and it drastically affects how strong a parry Neuer can produce. The fact that he got his hand to it and it did nothing should speak of the quality of Drogba's shot.

Just because Buffon and Casillas have made great saves in finals, it doesn't mean that Neuer "should" have made an "easy" save.

Actually, since he touched the ball, if he were as talented as Casillas and Buffon, he probably should have slipped it over the bar. Come on, Buffon will go down as one of the 5 best goal keepers in history, Casillas might also. Neuer isn't there yet.

Neuer certainly isn't there yet, however there's a vast difference between stating that the greatest goalkeepers of all time would have pulled it out of the fire and stating that it was a routine punch to be made.
