Hoeness launches attack on the plastic clubs
Bayern Munich supremo Uli Hoeness has launched a new attack on Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich ahead of the Champions League final.
Hoeness branded Abramovich one of the ‘oil mafia’ who take money from the public at petrol pumps to fund their football clubs.
"I get angry every week when I go to buy petrol," fumed Hoeness in the Daily Mail. "The oil mafia takes money out of my pocket to invest it in footballers. For me this stinks to high heaven and I include Mr Abramovich in all this. We need to beat clubs like Chelsea on the field of play. Chelsea are a club with their backs to the wall as a result of their patchy league season. If they lose they won’t be in the competition next year.
"If Bayern win it, we will make around £20million. That is what the game is all about: sporting success based on sound economic sense. Mr Abramovich has put £900m into Chelsea. If he pulls the plug on them, you’ll be able to pick the club up for the price of a puzzle magazine from a newsstand.
"I think it’s important for everyone at Bayern to feel that the club belongs to them. They must not have any fear that we will sell out to a Russian or Arabian consortium.
"When the financial fair play rules come in it will be a golden era for Germany’s clubs."

If Chelsea and City rise was part of American sports, they would be adored. Here in America underdogs are beloved and people wants to see new emerging teams challenge the regular heavyweights.
Never could understand why Europeans hate the Chelsea's of the world. Must be something to do with their hate and for capitalism.

The point is more that a team that gets an outside injection of 1 000 million Euros because a billionär wants it as new toy and thus just buys expensive players left and right as if there is no new tomorrow can hardly be called an underdog.Blue wrote:If Chelsea and City rise was part of American sports, they would be adored. that's because the underdog is a real underdog... literally all american sports are wage-capped, the underdogs had to work their way up... city and chelsea basically punched in a cheat for infinite money

Re: Hoeness launches attack on the plastic clubs
Hoeness may have a point but whenever someone rants on about moral battles it never impresses me.
The games will be played on the field and all the players have put in fantastic preformances to reach the final. What happens on the board room is one thing but such comments are disrespectful to Chelsea's squad's efforts in the tournament.
Maybe Bayern the club has the moral high ground over Chelsea the club but Bayern the squad don't deserve to win anymore than the Chelsea squad do.
Here's hoping for a great final and football match. Moral battles are really childish and boring imo.

The structure is different from our sports to Europeans, teams can rise and challenge top teams because of the equality. salary cap being one of the reason, but also the draft system. So no big injection of money is necessary for most cities, but small markets cities still suffer. Salary cap doesn't prevent teams going over the cap anyway, major cities are always over the cap.
Outsiders like yourself think of Chelsea as a toy but that is false. Roman has invested considerable time, money, and emotion into Chelsea and given a lot to the fans. Success that one would only dream of, few would've dreamed of the days of challenging the likes of Barcelona, Madrid, Milan, etc. He also attends almost every game, and has been seen numerous time watching the academy and youth play. Chelsea also does a lot for the community and does plenty of Philanthropy work. I would say Roman cares more for his club then almost every owner.
Not very familiar with City or other emerging clubs, but i am sure they can speak a similar manner.
So back to the underdog story in Europe. So how does a club in Europe challenge the likes of United, Madrid, Barcelona, Bayern, etc without the heavy injection of money?
It is no coincidence that historical goods team are still dominating the football world. Sure you have teams like Everton and Liverpool who are no longer top clubs, and that what happens when they lose strong financial backing.
Madrid and United of the world has a competitive advantage in plunking youngsters also. The best young and global talents usually end up at those places. In America the draft system allows the weaker times to choose ahead of the top teams, when it comes to picking the best young talents.
Big injection of money is the only chance clubs have against the top European clubs.

Re: Hoeness launches attack on the plastic clubs
God lord, why is Hoeness making me cheer Chelsea to win? Why dear Lord, why?!
On a very serious note, the moral high ground is great and all but Chelsea reached the final fair and square and forgive me for not taking serious his comment about patchy league form considering this is Bayern's last shot at major silverware for the season.

Re: Hoeness launches attack on the plastic clubs
I heard on the radio that the german press and the old bayern legends are putting an insane amount of pressure on this current Bayern side. Questioning whether Piggy is a true leader, someone said Neuer is good but not great yet, etc... they are going towards self destruction lol.
But seriously, i find it pretentious to speak out this way to give lessons to other clubs. If you are doing things well where you are, stay quiet and be happy with the work you have done.

Re: Hoeness launches attack on the plastic clubs
Well, in the Bundesliga, Borussia Dortmund nicely compete without huge injections of money. They simply improved their scouting and strategies and as you can see they are two times German champions now in the last two years (and that after they were virtually bankrupt in 2005). Okay, they crashed out of the CL this season, but nouveau-rich ManCity were only slightly more successful there, and I'm pretty sure that the BVB will do far better next season.Blue wrote:So back to the underdog story in Europe.
