I considered them, but they are and have been in the second division for some time, so they are not any longer contenders.

Historically, all of them are WC.
As of form, I'd say Barcelona, Milan, Bayern, Madrid and ManU.

Some clubs who have won a CL who are still in their top flight:
PSV, Feyernoord, Red Star Belgrade, Marseille, Hamburg, Aston Villa, Steaua Bucuresti... probably more but this is all I can think of for now.

In the 70es, Borussia M'gladbach fit the bill, too.

What is the point of this thread if you are not ranking them or even debating whether or not they are world class?
It's just a statement.

Re: World Class Clubs, let us be honest
I wonder if Arsenal deserves to be on this list. The only reason why Borussia Dortmund is on this list, but Arsenal isn't, is one mere game (CL final- 2006).
Domestically, Arsenal is way more successful than BVB, but internationally, not as successful, trophy wise. Yet, Arsenal probably has been more consistent than BVB over the years, which surely must count towards something.

Also, I think Valencia FC deserves a shout out as well. Domestically, they are roughly as successful as BVB, and internationally, they were pretty close to winning 2 CLs in a row.

It's not what clubs almost won that makes them world-class, its what they did win. Arsenal has never won a major European trophy. If you base it only on domestic titles than you also would have to include clubs like Genoa and Athletic Bilbao.

Re: World Class Clubs, let us be honest
Hmmm, I think maybe it's just Dortmund's presence on the list that sparked my posts. I just find it hard to think that Dortmund's a WC club while Arsenal and Valencia are not. IMO, either both are or both aren't. If Dortmund's on it, then Aston Villa and Hamburg both have strong cases to be on the list as well.Tomasso wrote:Kev wrote:I wonder if Arsenal deserves to be on this list. HSV is a dinosaur (actually that's their proper nickname even, not just made-up on the spot XD) - pretty strong in the past, but going extinct now, if they don't pull themselves together very fast
