Xavi plays deep aside in centre line with maximum one or none to mark him, while Zidane played within sea of defenders.
And Zidane did control games ,actually he is definitely one of the best game controlling AM i have ever seen.
Zidane has more ball technique in his toe than Xavi has in his entire body too.
LOL what ever makes you happy. For me Xavi has the best first touch I have ever seen, arguably better than MAradonas for, he is at that level. Zidane's first touch was never consistently this good, and this is coming from a guy that has watched him consistently for most of his career. I admit many things influence this, but the facct remains, Zidane lost the ball way more than Xavi did. So where was Xavi playing inthe Euros and the WC? as a regista? and for Barcelona he practiocally plays everywhere and seeing as teams pack the ball against Barcelona the myth that Xavi isn't man marked needs to be dispelled, Busquets maybe, but Xavi is constantly surrounded by 3 players minimum. would rather have Xavi in my team. Making stupid statements like that makes your whole arguement invalid and maes you seem like a very biased poster.
Lol at xavi having best first touch ever
Iniesta has a better one ffs
Being better player doesnt mean you have to be technically better.
xavi to me is more consistent but you cant ignore the level of difficulty that Iniesta or zidane or any AM face.
And xavi is as much marked as Iniesta or Zidane?
no comments really.Xavi selectively goes forward..you are comparing him to a out and out AM who will be marked all game and pressured?
I think xavi managed to semi-fail a control whilst doing a somersault once, for nearly achieving it = best first touch ever
seriously dont know why people are raving about it because he rarely miscontrols, denilson rarely miscontroled the ball.

"Denilson is seen as much more than just a holding midfielder, with Zubizarreta telling colleagues that the 22-year-old never seems to give the ball away"
:lol!:
Having a great trap is a lot more than just being consistant....
Jibbers is a utd fan though so i guess his opinion must be a bit exaggerated by xavis champions league final performances

Re: Xavi or Zidane?
Jibers do you avert your eyes while Messi and Iniesta push the defense (and the midfield which most times is part of the defense) as far away from Xavi as is practically possible on a football pitch.
Also.....he did play deep in the Euros.....he simply made frequent runs into the box.At the World Cup Xavi had a free role (Not an AM) and he choose most often to stay as deep and central as possible.
On topic
Terms dictated by thread - Xavi because consistency is central to the role you outlined.

Xavis first touch is more than just consistant aswell.....
Reading some responds from some madridistas on here, I very much doubt that they see Xavi and Barca play. Because if they did they would know that because the opposite team defend so deep, Xavi is on the final third alot hence why only Messi has made more passes on the final third than Xavi in the top 5 european leagues..

Re: Xavi or Zidane?
Still a no contest for me, Zidane all the way. Xavi has been great in Barcelona's best ever team with amazingly good team. He is an incredible team player, but Zidane had the qualities of a top class TEAM player AND a top class INDIVIDUAL player.

You can't Compare these Players
Xavi = Deep-lying central midfielder (Similar Players - Scholes, Pirlo)
Zidane = Attacking Midfielder (Similar Players - Ronaldinho)
There's no comparison

My point still stands in that regard as well. Zidane is not the type of player who would dictate the game. Zidane is an incisive attacking-midfielder. Xavi is a tempo-controller and that is what he is known for.

Re: Xavi or Zidane?
ceteris paribus any rational manager should be looking to win the match...Zizou is your man! Zidane could dictate the game like anybody in the business; besides slowing down tempo =/= controlling match!

Actually, that is precisely what it means. Slowing down or speeding up tempo means that you're dictating the pace that the game is played at. If a midfielder can do that then he is controlling the game.
Based on the question, I'd say Xavi controls games better because he is a deep lying play maker of course.

Re: Xavi or Zidane?
This question is flawed and in Xavi's favor.
It's like asking, who would you rather to save goals, Buffon or David Villa...It's simply not the same roles.

OP's question is flawed yes. Ramsey can slow down the tempo...is he bossing the midfield? Not so much...Zizou came out of retirement jus so Les Blues could give the ball to him to boss the midfield!
