Portugal's league has just surpassed France's in the UEFA rankings (which determines the amount of teams that go to european competitions) and has reached 5th place.

Which league do you think is the best?

the french league is the better one, but their teams have horrible in Europa league, they act like they dont care. PSG went out like a joke. In CL they do about the same, but Europa League made a huge difference.

How does one judge which is the stronger league? Pointless and no way to prove it.

I think of all the French and Portuguese teams, the best 2 are Benfica and Porto. But that doesnt make their league better.

The point of this thread is not to determine which is the better league. It's purpose is to find out why do people pick one over the other. As with any argumentative discussion.

An opinion is an opinion, it is not fact. Our discussion won't change anything. But it enlightens us on other people's views. Which is why forums exist in the first place.

Is it pointless to compare Ronaldo and Messi? Or United and Chelsea? Brazil with Spain? Nope, it isnt.

There are plenty ways to compare leagues. Success in europe, points difference, money, popularity, teams, players, etc.

I find, like you, that Benfica and Porto are the strongest teams, but despite that, I believe the French league is better. In my opinion it's more competitive overall and the mid-table teams are much stronger.

Yes, it is pointless to compare Cristiano and Messi, but lets not go there.

But anyway, the examples you used are different to this one. That being, everyone knows all those teams.

Whereas in this debate, myself and probably at most 5 others watch the Portuguese league with any sort of regularity. So, what kind of discussion to you expect?

Anyway, more competitive doesnt make it better..it just means all the teams are on a closer level. The French league is by this measure, more competitive than La Liga..but it obviously isnt better.

How many times have you seen those midtable Portuguese teams play? For you to come to the conclusion the French league mid table sides are better?
