Ex-Real Madrid defender Marquitos dies

MADRID -- Real Madrid says former defender Marcos "Marquitos" Alonso Imaz, who helped the club win a record five straight European Cups, has died. He was 78.

Marquitos, who twice played for Spain, was a regular for Madrid as the Spanish powerhouse won Europe's top prize from 1956 to 1960. Marquitos helped Madrid secure the 1960 Intercontinental Cup, plus six Spanish league titles, from 1954 to 1962 after joining from Racing Santander.

Former Madrid teammate Alfredo di Stefano said in Wednesday's Marca newspaper that Marquitos "gave me such security that we felt protected ... you were like a wall."

Marquitos' grandson, Marcos Alonso, currently plays for English club Bolton.

and his grandson is a Bolton player

but i personally have not seen him play

I started listening to Madrid on the radio in the 90's, but my dad grew up listening to Marquitos and his squad dominating Europe. He got emotional when I told him he passed away, this legend is now playing defender for the Real Madrid Heaven squad, RIP good sir

Ah, I remember watching the 1960 EC final (not live xD), with commentary from the great Kenneth Wolstenholme. Great player from the little I've seen.
