The Learn A New Language Thread
Regardless of whether people care about the idea of such a thread or if there already exists one...
I felt like creating a thread where maybe people can post some of there desires, when it comes to what languages they would want to learn, and why.
Along with that...Give some tips on...
1.How to learn a new Language
2.Great websites to learn a new language.
3.And real help from real speakers (posters) of that language
I personally am going to go ahead an try to learn german, i will start off by searching for classes near by, but first, are there any good websites out there?

You be surprised how many of us dont speak french. If you are bilingual you can get a good job with good pay. Many french speaking Canadians dont speak English either that is why if you find a bilingual its like finding gold lol.
We kinda hate each other lol, main reason why many of us dont want to learn English or french.
My younger brother speaks french but me I never was in to it but now I know I made a mistake. :vagi:

Nice, but are you doing it just for fun or for job opportunities?Raptorgunner wrote:I am signing up for Spanish classes soon. I was planing to learn french but I cant find any french classes in Toronto, end up signing up for Spanish classes.
Because from what u said on ur two posts im not sure
If you ever need any help, im here for ya (spanish language) :lucas:
I find spanish to be pretty simple, i guess its all about perspectives but i never figured english or spanish to be all too difficult to learn, or better put i think they are two of the "easier" ones, but this might be because i grew up with them...
Its just that when u go to some stores here, there are some arabs, japanese, chinese, and they speak both english and spanish to a very good extent, even the ones that say stereotypical phrases at big outlets, i guess its culture too, but everyone knows a bit of english/spanish. I couldnt imagine my self learning to speak their languages all that fast.

I think its both for fun and job opportunities. It would be nice if I can learn both french and Spanish. I know some french it would be easier for me to learn it again, I had french classes all through elementary and high school but I never really tried to learned it.
Thanks I would let you know if I need any help.

The problem with rosetta stone is that its something that might get you pumped up for learning a new language, but wont be completely enough.imalegend wrote:download Rosetta Stone.... never used it myself but alot of people say it is good...

Learning or Knowing a language means nothing until you can speak it with someone and have hands on experience with it....
i took Chinese in school for 3 years but i learned more by talking to Chinese people then learning it on my own...

Re: The Learn A New Language Thread
Took Japanese and German in high school....easily two of my favorite classes. Both teachers remain the best I've ever learned from.
Pity I've let both languages fade from memory though since I had no one to speak them with. Only remember and phrases now.
I'm looking into French and Spanish now though.

Re: The Learn A New Language Thread
I've heard good things about Rosetta stone; I think we actually had an old thread about it. My friend's girlfriend is Japanese and he learned via Rosetta stone and they plan to take a trip down there (she's originally from Japan) and he's Trinidadian. But it's also good to have someone to speak with, at the end of the day that's how you will master and really grasp the language.

Re: The Learn A New Language Thread
Rosseta stone is legit.
I used it to learn Portuguese. The downside is, while you learn alot its still not quite enough for you to converse. You get alot, but you certainty need more.
However, the way in which you learn I seriously rate and there are tons of words and phrases that are permant in my mind and regardless of practice I can feel they are never leaving.
Its my fault I dont speak fully, I have not practiced enough with people and I have not really followed it up. But I understand a surprising amount I think.

Re: The Learn A New Language Thread
Learning and understanding is easy but when you start conversing and trying to form verbs and conjugating it's tough because you have absolutely no idea what you're saying or if it fits. You can throw the write words out there just not in the right form.

You do get taught to converse within the programme, you have conversations within it which you have to do correctly before learning more.

Re: The Learn A New Language Thread
Never tried the program , but I know those programs place emphasis on the conversational aspect.
For me tho learning in school, the conjugating aspect was always difficult.
I can have a decent conversation now but that's more due to my parents and my sister than actual effort.I really need to get back to Spain to actually fully ingratiate myself into the language.
But when talking in Spanish I'm short and to the point.

Re: The Learn A New Language Thread
Ya im going to try to download rosetta stone german version and give it a shot.
But i will also be taking lessons in real life, so theres no downside really.
Some stats guy came out with a stat that the majority of people learning a new language dont study for more than two hours outside of classes, i dont know but sometimes you need to just let it be, and practice and it will come naturally without you noticing.
One question about rosetta stone is though, do they help you pronunciuate the letters and alphabet?
If i download it through a torrent, i wont have a mic which makes the process a bit broken.

Need the mic to get the most out of it, no doubt.
They help you on all 3 of those things.
You can change the difficulty level of the pronuncation if you like. The harder the more precise you have to be, the easier the level they more loose you can be. If you dont pronounce correctly, you cant move on to the next part of the lesson.
You have to use the alphabet and letter to type in the correct spelling of words.

Yeah, its really expensive and overall, probably not worth it. I got mine as a gift so I obviously didnt mind.
It is very useful and proved effective for me though.
