Leagues re-branding Empty Leagues re-branding

Post by teamanarchy Mon Dec 26, 2011 3:14 pm

I've always thought about it, and I was wondering why I've never brought it up for discussion before...

English first division was not exactly the best league. Then in 1992, it was re-branded the FA Premier League, and since then revenues for the league have increased, along with audiences. Subsequently the quality of football has improved drastically as well... So much so that the Premier League is considered by many as the best league in the world, and it brings in astronomical revenues, it boasts a ton of international world class talents across all teams.
Now, can you consider a similar change taking place in other European leagues?
The Italian Serie A has declined dramatically since the Calciopoli scandal. La Liga is a two-horse race with half of the teams struggling with debt and the league is nowhere near the level it was on in the early 2000s. Germany's Bundesliga, although enjoying huge crowd attendances, little debt and a broad line of competitive teams, continues to be considered "second rate"... The Portuguese Liga Sagres is a pretty small competition also only really about two teams, with very little revenue being pumped through the league.

Now, I won't pretend that I understand terribly much about the EPL re-branding or any of the finer intricacies... BUT, it's clear that it made a huge difference for English football. Do you think other leagues should try the same thing? And, if so, what do you think will be the implications?

What would the impact be?

What was the big change in the PL?

Its improvement came with overseas players joining the coaching and playing staff, the globalisation of the league so to speak.

Every league is different and has its own specifics and needs, so I dont think it makes much sense to copy another.

How would rebranding solve the complete control of Barca and Madrid? I am yet to hear anything which suggests rebranding will make this kind of difference.

the rebranding, brought in better stadiums, kicked racism out of football, took hooliganism out of the game

and made england are more comfortable area for foriegn players

AND FINALLY, IT SHARED TV RIGHTS MONEY EQUALLY FOR ALL 20 TEAMS

And how would that translate over to say La Liga and help in that aspect?

As I said, it league is different and has its own issues.

Foriegn players feel fine moving to the likes of Sevilla, Atletico and so on, thats not a problem. The problem is they dont have the finance to compete on that (Madrid, Barca) kind of level.

Even if they did have the finance, that wouldnt assure anything because those two are giants who are currently playing at a very high level.

It wasnt like La Liga tv money wise before the rebrand, so its not a relevant point.

it did help though, teams like Fulham can afford players like Bryan Ruiz, Frei and Dembele.. money helped

How does that solve the problem in La Liga?

Atletico signed Falcao, Arda Turan and Diego and still nowhere near competing.

In the end I think the problem lies with Madrid and Barcelona being superior to every team out there and the mentality (especially Atletico)

TV rights money would help though (especially Valencia)

The problem I would agree is more mental than anything. It's not like the Spanish top 4 have shit squads... far from it. They do decently in Europe, so it's not quality that's lacking.

Money doesn't give you everything, else ManC wouldn't be playing Europa league football.

Money would give depth to the Mid table teams. Sure, you'd have Barca and Real dominating but it wouldn't be as easy as they've shown it to be.

For La Liga, I would engage in some rebranding to help improve the league internationally, then of course change the TV revenue system. Like, half is shared equally, and half is distributed according to final league position. The retarded management has to go, and some kind of reasonable financial help to the clubs in debt would be nice too.

The re-branding, IMO (and like I said, I cannot even pretend to be clued up...) would give a league like La Liga a bigger worldwide reach (which Perez is trying to start with midday kickoffs)...
That's the thing about the EPL. It's watched at all corners of the globe, meaning that money coming in for things such as TV rights increase.
The big problem with La Liga is the TV rights structure.
Now, imagine those revenues triple (for example).
Would the top 2 be so upset about forfeighting their share if their profits are hardly affected with the major increase?

But we're missing the point here.
What about Serie a, Bundesliga, Ligue 1, Liga Sagres etc.?
Maybe somebody knows exactly how much the re-branding is responsible for the increase in quality of the English game...
