Doc wrote:Calling a black person "coloured" is taboo really. Relics of the days of having places separated by "White Only" and "Coloured Only". Yes, the phrase is still very much insulting to quite a few black people. The thing is, I don't think Hansen really has anything to apologise for as I doubt he meant anything by it.
But, he works for the BBC so he needs to toe the line of political correctness.
That's the thing......coloured is a generalisation for non whites.......a term encompassing but not limited to Blacks.
Blacks can't expect to be insulted by every little thing that reminds them of slavery.

Big issue about nothing tbh.

To be fair to Hansen, for a wile you couldnt say Black in fear of offending. In schools they banned the singing of bah bah black sheep. Black boards wernt allowed to be called black boards any more.
So people started using coloured as a more politically correct phrase.
Then people started getting offended by that.
To be honest what ever words you use you to describe some one, there is always some one who will get offended.

look this has to stop
its becoming laughable
its good to see almost everyone agreeing with me
people have to start looking at context,
if he was insulting these people by being purposefully insulting then yeah fine apologize and fire him
but he isnt
let it go...

The xcx wrote:Its not imo, but black people seem to take it as a offense or a racial. Its the case with US. black people always fighting for human rights and how racism is wrong and should be punishing and so on, but they implify the fact that they want more human rights than white for example. Which does not only make white people racist. just sayinbuddytaller wrote:Racism is surely a cultural thing, just can't get my head round why calling someone coloured is racist!
As a black American I'll say this, the word 'colored' isn't really hateful towards us in today's world but with the passage of time others become unfamiliar with the history of the term. You have to know that in America after black people were enslaved, society was entirely segregated. Let me make this clear. EVERYTHING WAS SEGREGATED. And guess who the segregation was signified? Signs for white facilities such as drinking fountains, rest rooms, etc. were labeled WHITE and COLORED. And of course the facilities for the 'COLORED' people were always of lower quality. Not to mention the fact that 'separate but equal' is inherently unequal.
That's why the mention of the word 'colored' especially coming from a white person can cause some angst among people. This history may not be known in the UK or the rest of Europe but that is what's rooted here in America.
Having said that, I do not think that what he said was all that heinous, or intentionally racist. His apology on the matter was enough, and he certainly doesn't deserve to lose his job or anything extreme like that.

Why wasn't Fergie hounded as much when he dropped the infamous "typical Germans" line? It all culminated in a bit of a giggle in the back pages of a few newspapers the day after and quickly forgotten about
Hansen uses a pretty innocent phrase within understandable context and is almost lynched for it

"Typical Germans" = Ethnocentrism from Fergie and Ethnic discrimination.Sahdes of social darwinian thought coming through which is equally as bad as Racism, if not worse.
a better question
Why wasn't Schmeicel punished for his "Black Bastard " comment and why weren't Fergie and Man Utd labelled racists for defending him?
