Mom shoots kids when denied food stamps
A Texas woman unable to qualify for food stamps for months walked into a state welfare office with a gun, then shot her two children and killed herself during a seven-hour standoff, officials said Tuesday.
The children, a 10-year-old boy and a 12-year-old girl, were in critical condition Tuesday, Laredo police investigator Joe Baeza said.
The standoff began around 5 p.m. Monday afternoon. Baeza said the woman was speaking with two employees when she pulled out a gun and said she wanted to speak to a supervisor. When the supervisor arrived, he convinced her to let the employees go in exchange for keeping him.
Meanwhile, about 25 other people were moved to safety, police said.
The identity of the mother and children were still not made public.
Texas Health and Human Services spokeswoman Stephanie Goodman said the woman first applied for assistance in July.
Goodman said the mother was denied because she didn't submit enough information.
Goodman said the mother called the office in mid-November to check on her case. That was apparently the last time she tried contacting the state before the shooting, Goodman said.
Goodman said the woman specifically requested to speak with a different caseworker, other than the one she had been working with, when she entered the building Monday. She was escorted to a private room and revealed a gun shortly after, Goodman said.
Police negotiators stayed on the phone with the woman throughout the evening, but she kept hanging up. She let the supervisor go unharmed around 7:45, but stayed inside the office with her children. After hanging up the phone around 11:45, police heard three shots, and a SWAT team entered the building. Inside, they found her body and her two wounded children.
The 38-year-old woman had recently moved to the area from Zanesville, Ohio, about 30 miles east of Columbus, Baeza said. She told negotiators about a litany of complaints against state and federal government agencies. It sounded like she had been denied services several months ago, Baeza said, but it wasn't clear what specifically triggered Monday's standoff.
"This wasn't like a knee-jerk reaction," Baeza said, adding that the woman felt she was owed restitution of some sort. A spokeswoman for the state's welfare agency did not immediately return a call seeking comment.
The children were "very critical" and unconscious when taken from the scene, he said. Their names, along with the name of the woman, were not released by police.

Billions of dollars on unnecessary wars to bring democracy to people outside AMERICA, meanwhile American children have no money to buy FOOD.
Poor women all she wanted to was to help her family, I know what she did was wrong but, shame on the people who denied her.

In another news.
US: Chiropractor, wife received welfare while living in $1.2 million waterfront home
SEATTLE - Prosecutors say a Seattle chiropractor and his wife drove a luxury car and lived in a $1.2 million waterfront home while claiming welfare assistance.
The U.S. attorney's office filed a civil lawsuit last Friday accusing David Silverstein and Lyudmila Shimonova of filing false claims. Prosecutors are demanding they pay back more than $135,000 in federal housing assistance since 2003 and are seeking tens of thousands of dollars in fines.
The government says that in gaining Section 8 housing assistance, Shimonova represented that she lived alone with her two children and that her household assets were less than $5,000. Silverstein received the monthly benefits of $1,272 as Shimonova's purported landlord.
Silverstein, who drives a black Jaguar, says his lawyer asked him not to comment.

The girl died. The mom never should've had custody of those kids with the type of mental illnesses she had. Really sad story, the brother is still alive in very critical condition. I hope he pulls through.

Nah man, this was completely premeditated, and she's probably crazy. If you want food you don't go around shooting your own blood.
