They already do. They play possession football.

On topic, Spain should never go back to 4-2-2. If you notice the tactical change in the last 5 years, as the wc shows, 4-4-2 variants are illogical and at the highest level it has proved fatal. In the Euros quite a few teams deployed 4-4-2 so it was okay to play that way, but in todays climate, even SPain would suffer. Their play is now based rigorously on possession, more so than Aragones side. Even in the final Aragones didn't play a 4-4-2, he's not an idiot. No matter how good you are at keeping the ball if you come up agains a 4-5-1 or a 4-3-3- you will suffer. 4-2-2 simply would not suit Spain.

Well, I bet teams playing against Spain would welcome them only having 8 field playersjibers wrote:On topic, Spain should never go back to 4-2-2. (...) 4-2-2 simply would not suit Spain.

Really all they needed yesterday night was a true #9, tbh. You know, someone who would take the chances given.

The main thing is both teams have a great midfield and play possession football.
The problem with Spain is they play 4 CM's, 5 yesterday with 1 natural forward. Silva is barely a forward as it is, so they need to sacrifice one of the midfielders for an attacker like Pedro or Mata.
Xavi and Iniesta is a proven midfield, whether they play for Spain or Barca, regardless of styles. So they would automatically be the heart of the midfield. Next they need a DM behind them, whether that be Alonso or Busquets.
Villa should be up front with 2 of Torres/Mata/Silva/Pedro/Navas/Llorente.
People seem to forget Messi isn't the only way Barca score when Barca are at their peak.

Saying SPain and Barcelona play the same way is like saying United of 06-09 played like RM because they were/are both CA teams. Barcelona have fullbacks that offer them massive amount of width, Spain don't so they play very narrow, even more so than Barcelona. Messi is key because with him there he is able to drag players out of position. I mean it might be simple but what he offer Barcelona is something that no other person can replicate in football atm. Spain just don't have that cutting edge or the width to be able to play like Barcelona.

Spain's fullbacks don't provide width? Every time I watch them they're usually bombing forward and providing width.

Spain's fullbacks yesterday were the width for them when in possession.
What Spain are doing isn't perfect and there are improvements. For example playing more forwards who make off the ball runs.
To me it seems right now they just rely on some 1-2 pass luck outside the box to score.
