Arsenal v Stoke City, Sunday 23rd October, 1.30pm, Premier League, Emirates Stadium

Arsenal v Stoke Preview Tumblr_lh4jt0BNnH1qdcvvh
Squillaci's header won this fixture last season

Arsenal looking for back-to-back wins

Arsenal's 1-0 win over Stoke in February at the Emirates last season was the last time Arsenal have won back-to-back games (the previous game was a 2-0 win over Wolves). Since that win, the gunners have won just 5 of their 19 league fixtures. Sebastian Squillaci's first half header gave Arsenal the 3 points in a game that came just days before the infamous carling cup final defeat - Arsenal lost Cesc Fabregas and Theo Walcott to injuries in the game too.

Stoke squad now better than ever

Stoke City's summer signings - Peter Crouch, Wilson Palacios, Jonathan Woodgate, Matthew Upson and Cameron Jerome - have added strength in depth to an already combative squad. Stoke City rested several first team players on Thursday night against Maccabi Tel-Aviv in the Europa League but still strolled to a 3-0 win at the Britannia Stadium. Arsenal have often struggled on journeys up north to Stoke but at the Emirates Arsenal have an immaculate record against the potters.

Arsenal win in France boosts confidence

Arsenal have now won 5 of the last 6 fixtures in all competitions following the 1-0 win at Marseille on Wednesday. Aaron Ramsey's 92nd minute at the Stade Veldorome put Arsenal top of their Champions League group and the gunners are in complete control of their destiny in Europe now. The performance in mid-week was far from great, and only livened up once Gervinho was introduced, but Rovin van Persie and Theo Walcott had chances to put Arsenal ahead before Ramsey's injury time winner. Laurent Koscielny's excellent performance in defence stood out.

Match Facts

* Stoke have managed just six shots on target and one goal (from a penalty) in three visits to the Emirates Stadium.

* Arsenal have scored in all seven matches against Stoke in all competitions since the Potters were promoted back to the Premier League.

* Stoke City have fired in fewer shots on target (21) than any other team in the Premier League and only Swansea (34%) have a worse shooting accuracy (36%).

* Robin van Persie has scored 23 goals in 25 Premier League games in 2011

* Stoke have scored the highest percentage of goals from set pieces in the top flight (67%) while Arsenal have scored the lowest percentage (8%).

* Stoke City have made the fewest passes under 35 yards (1799), while Arsenal have made the fewest passes over 35 yards (319).

* Robin van Persie has hit the woodwork 19 times since August 2008; five more than any other player and only five other players are in double figures.

* Stoke have never drawn a Premier League game away against a London club, winning three and losing 12 of their visits to the capital.

* Arsenal have used the joint-most players in this season’s Premier League (27), while only Aston Villa (19) have used fewer than Stoke City (20).

Manager's Views

Arsene Wenger

“Financially it means they have moved up. When you buy Crouch that means financially they have made a big effort. That means now they are in a different category of clubs, yes of course. They are a good team, especially offensively. Pennant, Etherington, Walters, Crouch, Jerome - offensively they have huge potential. They are always difficult at the back to beat because the back four is stable and doesn't push forward too much. They go for a more direct game, that's why it is difficult to get them out of position. But at home we have always done well against them and that is what we want to continue to do.”

Tony Pulis

"It was a smashing win (against Maccabi Tel-Aviv in the Europa League on Thursday night). Scoring three goals, keeping a clean sheet and no injuries was important. And getting Kenwyne Jones through 90 minutes after his injury was fantastic. I made seven changes, but those who haven't been playing regularly have come in and their attitude has been spot-on once again."

Great preview Sam.

Must win match at home, wont be easy. I just hate this team and there is nothing better then beating them down like nothing and scoring few goals.

Great job Sam
it seems Etherington is not at his best good luck to Johan anyway he is playing out of position
as you said its like blessing in disguise with JD we 'll have more height in defence
Per vs Crouch bounce hope per will keep him quiet
Crouch really troubled Ferdinand and Jones at Britannia
and with JD,Per,Kos,Song & RVP we should have enough to deal with their throw ins
do it properly lads

*Coping with Stoke's Long Throw *
Thumbs up
really hate them and want us to put them past so many goals but boring 1-0 without injury is acceptable

they are 2 vertical chalkboards that both compare Arsenal with others.
---------------------------
Arsenal will have to end a disturbing trend if they're to convince critics that they're on the way back to the top four. They've lost all four Premier League games this season that have followed Champions League matches. They haven't won domestically after a European tie since last November.
LETS END THIS BLEEP RUN

Van Persie will be rested v Bolton on Tuesday in Carling Cup, not on Sunday in another must-win game.

We need him fit for Chelsea away next Saturday too.

Tough tie.. But nowadays which tie isnt tough ?
We must manage to win.. Concerned about Djurou.. He just need to stay back and defend and dont think that he is playing RB... Time to give Walcott a rest or break.. Want Alex or Benayoun to start.. Also Rosicky should play a major part in this game..

i didnt spot anything wrong while reading it hmm

anywho

Tomorrow we all know whats going to happen. we will attack, they will defend, they will counter, win throw ins and corners and try to take the lead

if they take the lead, will will then starta cat n mouse game. Trying to get a goal in but their keeper will make amazing saves and deny everyone in the team.

If they dont take the lead we will continue pressing them and then get a goal in somewhere

Unless we score early on then it will be much more easy

I see us winning though.

Yes exactly, if we score in the fist 10 min, I am sure we will blow them away. I have a feeling we will leave it late. I would not mind resting RVP and maybe bring him on if we need him in the second half.

This is a good game for Park to start, not sure he is even on the bench?
