coentrao is a great left back, he had some great games. especially versus barcelona. dont want him to be sold. but something is wrong with him. discipline

Real Madrid coach Jose Mourinho is refusing to play Seleção full-back Marcelo due to a dispute over weight issues according to reports in Spain.

AS claims that Marcelo has gained weight during his recovery from a metatarsal injury picked up from training with the Seleção and Mourinho has insisted that the Brazilian needs to reduce his weight before being picked.

The Portuguese coach is currently playing Fabio Coentrão at left-back and it is unknown how long Marcelo could be sidelined for.

The Brazilian left back has been ruled out of action since October 14 when he suffered a broken metatarsal that ruled him out for nearly three months.

Marcelo underwent an operation in Amsterdam in preparation for his comeback but it now seems that he will be sidelined for the forseeable future.

The Seleção star has been a mainstay in the Real Madrid side since joining in 2006 from Fluminense making 218 appearances and scoring 17 goals.

come on now dont be cynical.

but these are just reports, even though i dont have any problem with this if it is true anyway. he need to get back to shape. dont want him to play when he isnt in the best physical condition to play, he may re injure himself.

he needs looks a little different than before his injury though, weight-wise, but the coaching staff will know best

plus it ha to be a serious issue to leave him out, as he is much better than coentrao.

if he has gained weight, that will effect his speed, stamina and his overall play, and thus we can't play him, simple as that!!!

Why does everything have to be about Mourinho, Marcelo is one of Mourinho's favourites, he even called Coentrao the Portuguese "Marcelo" even before Marcelo had played a match under him.

Before Mourinho, no Real Madrid coach had given Marcelo an extended run at left back despite being at the club for about 4 years or so. Mourinho played a big part in making him the left back he is today.

Losing weight would only benefit Marcelo, Benzema did it some time back and he came back in superb form, I hope Marcelo sheds the excess pounds quickly and rejoins the team, he's been missed.

I noticed that too

But he does make a good point. Jose is not out to get Marcelo, because he clearly likes him enough to give him an extended run (something other managers didn't do).

I love Marcelo but I want him to be in the best shape.

Marcelo at his best is much better. The only reason Coentrao is starting is because Marcelo isn't in good enough shape to do so.

Zealous is right. Coentrao can be a good defender that's all. Marcelo gives us something else in attack.
