Xavi? Is this a joke? When has he ever been the best? He is up there but he has and never will be number 1. Ronaldo was better in 08, messi and Ronaldo in 09, Sneijder and Messi in 10, messi in 11. He deserves top 3 but he is nowhere the best, and you all know it.

this comment makes no sense...

Actually you don't make any sense it's not a lifetime achievement award. Was Totti ever the best in any year ?

The whole notion of being the "best" is any year is a flawed notion. Because this is a team sport, and because there are different positions.

The Ballo d'or award is a farce regardless, any award that does not honor the spine of the team and the instead submits for glamor and media is a farce.

Every best list is flawed but some still say Messi is the best in the world.

Agree, best is not an empirical value like tallest, heaviest, or densest.

Its open to strong subjective opinions.

Stop jkoing people look at best players list Zidane, R9, Rivaldo, Figo, Ronaldinho etc. which player from your list was in these players level? to be great player is not enough you must best of the best to win this award. nobody deserves it compared to those players
Cannavaro shitted into this list it was bad image for the award, but it is not repeated again. messi winning award in 2010 (without any major titles) was good for football and for the award's reputation. lets hope cannavaro scandal will not happen again

He deserved that award as much as Gareth Barry deserves to play in a top league...

I agree that in 2006, Gianluigi Buffon deserved it more than Cannavaro did. Even based on season play because at that time, Juventus were amongst the best, albeit it was in the wake of Calciopoli, but that had nothing to do with it because Cannavaro left Juventus after Calciopoli, so they were both from Juventus.

Gianluigi Buffon deserved it.

I prefer to think of it from the angle of who was "robbed". Xavi and Iniesta don't qualify because clearly Messi was the most important piece to Barca's success.

Pirlo, yes. Way more instrumental than Cannavaro to Italy's success.

Maldini, yes. For the sheer reason that if Cannavaro as a defender can win it, then surely there was at least one year where Maldini could have been considered as well.

The most glaringly obvious though, Riquelme. With such a high opinion of himself, how could they not give him a Ballon d'or :coffee: Quite clearly Villareal died after he left :coffee:
So Xavi and Iniesta's world cup, they just dont matter? Or the Euro 08', doesnt matter either? How could they not be considered? Xavi has easily become THEE best CM in the game over the last 3 years, and counting. Why wouldn't he qualify? To me, its still Henry by a mile, but how does Xavi, such a Maestro with his accolades, not qualify?

MMM Here's the problem , I'm not quite sure but Euro 08 season counted as part of Barca's third place finish in the Balon D'or judging eliminating any chance he had.If it had been Euro 08 + the following season he would've surely have won.

Last year Messi had too much of a sensational season for anyone else to even be considered.Iniesta scored 1 goal in 09-10, even his world cup performance could not recover from that.

Basically though they have accumulated a very good argument for being deserving of the award circumstances have never quite come through for them to really deserve it based on the set judgement scale.

Sad really .

Still have no idea how Ballack didn't win it in the 01/02 season. By far the best midfielder in the World at the time.

People saying Messi winning it last was a disgrace what about Owen how he ever won this award in basically the golden generation of football(imo) i will never know...

Del Piero, Pirlo, Maldini and Batigol all have stronger cases than most of the poll options.

I wish they make a award for consistently being great most of the people we name will get that award and IMO it would be way more prestigeous.

Yea true. That's why they never won the award.

It's all about the individual who had the best season and not the most consistent through many seasons.

Maldini not winning the award is understandable even though he is one of the best players of all time.
