Euro 2020 Empty Euro 2020

The Football Association has submitted a bid for Wembley to host either the Euro 2020 semi-finals and final, or some group matches.

The English bid has been submitted to Uefa ahead of the midnight deadline, while Wales and Scotland have also bid for group matches.

It was announced in December that the European Championship would be held in multiple cities across Europe.

Uefa will announce the 13 host cities at a ceremony on 19 September.

FA general secretary Alex Horne said: "We are bidding for either of the two packages available and, with our recent experience of hosting two Uefa Champions League finals in the last four years, we believe that Wembley Stadium and London represent a strong bid for Uefa to consider to mark the tournament's 60th anniversary.

"We recognise Uefa is considering many strong bids from a number of candidate cities and we welcome the opportunity to put forward our bid."

Scottish Football Association chief Stewart Regan said earlier in the week that it was "highly unlikely" there would be four winning bids from the United Kingdom and Republic of Ireland, which will also submit its bid on Friday.

Both Scotland and Wales have applied to host group stages matches and a last-16 tie for the 24-team tournament.
A number of the 32 countries who initially registered an interest have dropped out of the running, including Portugal, Poland and the Czech Republic.

The DFB (German FA) bid for two packages - either three group stage matches plus one quarter final or the semi finals plus the final. The venue they submitted is the Allianz Arena in München which was chosen over Dortmund and Berlin.

Euro 2020 Empty Re: Euro 2020

Turkey has dropped its bid to host the 2020 European Championship final and semifinals, and will focus on hosting Euro 2024 alone.

Turkey's football federation announced its decision ahead of Friday's bidding deadline despite Istanbul being a front-runner for the marquee matches with support already pledged by UEFA President Michel Platini.

"We believe ... we are at a point where we can undertake the entire tournament, not just the semifinals and final," the Turkish federation said in a statement.

The strategic move makes England and Germany favored to receive the prestige package of final and semifinals for the 24-nation 2020 tournament. England has proposed Wembley Stadium in London and Germany has offered the Allianz Arena in Munich.

UEFA will choose 13 host cities across Europe for Euro 2020 at a Sept. 19 meeting of its executive committee.

Twelve winning bidders will each host three group-stage matches and a single knockout match from the last-16 or quarterfinals rounds.

At least 20 UEFA member countries are expected to meet Friday's deadline to bid, including Italy and the Netherlands, plus newcomers Azerbaijan and Romania.

A total of 32 countries expressed interest last September when Turkey was already a clear favorite for the final.

Platini has publicly supported Turkey's claim since his native France won a close race between the countries in May 2010 to host Euro 2016.

Turkey seemed sure to host Euro 2020 alone but the campaign was complicated by Istanbul's insistence on bidding for the 2020 Olympics, scheduled weeks later.

Despite UEFA and Platini seeking a firm commitment for its tournament, Turkey's political and sporting leaders proceeded in the Olympics contest won by Tokyo last year.

Turkey automatically becomes the favorite to host Euro 2024, with one of its probable opponents -- England or Germany -- likely to step aside if either gets the prestige matches in 2020.

Also Friday, France and Switzerland withdrew from the Euro 2020 bidding, saying it was too soon to repeat as host nations.

Switzerland shared Euro 2008 with neighboring Austria.

Euro 2012 co-host Poland backed out this week, following the Czech Republic, Croatia, Finland and Portugal.

UEFA will confirm the Euro 2020 candidates on Saturday.

Euro 2020 Empty Re: Euro 2020

Uefa has announced that the semi-finals and final of Euro 2020 will be held in either London or Munich.

Nineteen member associations have submitted bids to host matches at the competition, which will be held in 13 different cities across the continent in six years' time.

However, the only bids for the semi-finals and final package came from England and Germany, with Wembley and the Allianz Arena also in the running to stage matches earlier in the competition.

Baku, Minsk, Brussels, Sofia, Copenhagen, Skopje, Budapest, Jerusalem, Rome, Amsterdam, Dublin, Bucharest, St Petersburg, Glasgow, Bilbao, Stockholm and Cardiff are the other cities hoping to secure one of the 12 standard packages, comprised of three group games and a knockout tie.

Thirty-two associations had initially expressed an interest in hosting matches and those who have submitted dossiers will learn their fate on September 19, when the Uefa Executive Commitee announce their final decision.

"We are extremely happy to have received so many bids to host Uefa EURO 2020," said Uefa president Michel Platini in a statement.

"The 60th year anniversary edition of the tournament will be an historic one, with matches played in many European countries.

"By spreading the Euro across our continent, we will allow more fans from more nations to share in the excitement of hosting such a magical event.

"Member associations will also benefit greatly from this format, since more of them will be exposed to an elite tournament and have the opportunity to increase the development of football in their respective countries."
