Messi reaches record for most goals scored in a calendar year for Argentina

With today's goal Messi has scored 12 goals in 8 games during 2012, meeting Batitusta's 1998 record. He is also 2 goals shy of reaching Maradona in the all-time Argentine high-scorer list, and has 14 goals scored in 14 games during the Sabella era.

It's 12 goals in 8 games in 2012. Batigol 12 in 12 games.

He has always been performing well for Argies, although this year he has surely taken it near the Barca level. Although I still feel Argies have lot to imrpove. The defense, the midfield and the team play, understanding. I wont be suprised if they crash again at WC.

Should be pointed out that 6 of those goals came in friendly matches against Switzerland and Brazil u-23 squad(Brazil CB's were Uvini and Juan).

Still only 14 of his goals (out of 31) have come in official competitions, 5 of which have come this year.

In comparison Higuain has 13 goals (out of 16) in official competitions, 4 of which have come this year.

Not saying Higuain is better just putting it in perspective.

Plus why does this rule suddenly apply? So many people fap over Pele's goal record but never mention majority were friendlies but suddenly now they do not count in modern day?

Speaking of Pele, his best haul was 11 goals in 9 games in 1959.

The difference is Pele led Brasil to international success before the age of 25

Messi has yet to do that, that's why people are mentioning it.

He is looking better for Argentina though, so we will see.

Didn't see the Switz game, but i was at Metlife Stadium to watch the Brazil game. Neymar, Oscar, and Messi put on a show, enjoyed the game but i don't think you are going to see those CB's for Brazil again for a while.

Your opinion bro, but i think most would agree that there were much more significant and meaningful games played to consider that the best international game of the year.

Wasn't aware Ashley Cole played for Brazil.

Lol at Marcelo being the best LB in the world, awesome attacking wise no doubt but that is about it. I rate Filipe Luis higher tbh.

Don't care about the Batigol vs Messi, can't remember much from 1998 outside of the World cup. Batistuta and Argentina were fantastic should've probably advanced. I don't think i am qualified to dispute whos season is better.

Of course he scored in a lot of friendlies, they are most played games so he's going to score more.

Go through any player in history and guarantee that the majority of the goal tally came in friendlies.

In any case he's the joint top scorer in the Copa America qualifying.

A fair point to make but as pointed out earlier, Batigol also had his fair share of friendly goals in the record setting season at 7. Messi has the same number of goals scored at friendlies with 3 against Switzerland, 3 against Brazil and another against Germany.

I'd also argue that no match against Brazil is a friendly, but I suppose on a technicality it is

It'd be interesting to see the record for official goals in a calendar year and see whether it was met or not, but I don't know

There is friendly against Saudi-Arabia November 14. (international brake?), don't know if it will be the first choice squad though. Although there are some other games, it's the only possible for Messi.
