Edit: i asked a Barca fan who follows Youth Teams regularly, this is what he said:

Horrible coaching and tactics from us... real shame... We were rubbish this whole tournament. Then he changed the formation for this game as well, the players had never played it before! So frustrating...

Roberto better start the next game... Which was his assist?

A home-grown eleven

This season, the first team will have eleven players that came up through the club’s youth system. Fifty per cent of the team is from la Masia.

The power of the Barça youth system is more evident than ever. Guardiola often fields around six or seven local players in a game, whether at El Molinón or in the Champions League final. The doors to the first team are wide open to players fostered at the club itself, as Thiago and Fontàs well know, who have both just become fully fledged first team members.

This year there are an unprecedented 11 players from La Masia out of a total of 21. These aren’t reserves used as a complement, these are first team players in every sense of the word.

Starting eleven

It is years since the team has had so many of its own players to choose from, and although some players would have to play in unfamiliar positions, Guardiola could theoretically play them all at once: Valdés in goal; Puyol and Fontàs as full backs; Busquets and Piqué at centre back; Xavi, Thiago and Cesc in midfield and Pedro, Messi and Iniesta up front. Cesc completes an eleven that would fill any Barça fan with pride.

Nine under Rijkaard

Under the Dutchman in the 2003/04 season, there were eight local players in the first team: Valdés, Puyol, Xavi, Gerard, Gabri, Luis García and Motta. But they weren’t all regular starters. In 2008, there were nine: Valdés, Puyol, Xavi, Iniesta, Giovanni, Messi, Oleguer, Bojan and Jorquera. Under Guardiola, the number has done nothing but increase.

La Masia products in recent years

Season 2010/11: Valdés, Piqué, Puyol, Xavi, Iniesta, Bojan, Messi, Jeffren, Busquets and Pedro.

Season 2009/10: Valdés, Piqué, Puyol, Xavi, Iniesta, Messi, Bojan, Busquets and Pedro.

Season 2008/09: Valdés, Piqué, Puyol, Xavi, Iniesta, Messi, Bojan, Busquets and Jorquera.

Season 2007/08: Valdés, Puyol, Xavi, Iniesta, Giovanni, Messi, Oleguer, Bojan and Jorquera.

Season 2006/07: Valdés, Motta, Puyol, Xavi, Messi, Oleguer, Iniesta and Jorquera.

Season 2005/06: Valdés, Motta, Puyol, Xavi, Gabri, Oleguer, Iniesta and Jorquera.

Season 2004/05: Valdés, Motta, Puyol, Xavi, Gerard, Oleguer, Iniesta and Jorquera.

Season 2003/04: Valdés, Puyol, Xavi, Gerard, Gabri, Luis Garcia, Motta and Jorquera.

I expect this number to increase to 14 out of 22 players next season "2012/2013" Smile

Sergi Roberto to replace Kieta
Montoya In Maxwell Out
Plus Bartra (4th CB, can play @ RB also)!!

This number will increase in the coming few years, until we reach a team Almost "ALL MADE IN LA MASIA" (Van Gaal Very Happy was right )Smile

The return of the World Cup Under-20 players complete the group

The internationals from the Barça B team who played in the World Under-20 Championships returned to work on Wednesday. Eusebio was able to direct training with the whole squad, with the exception of Soriano, Ilie, and Muniesa.

Sergio Roberto, Marc Bartra, Christian Tello, Carlos Plana, and Kiko Femenía joined in training this morning with the Barça B team. They came home after being knocked out on penalties by Brazil in the World Under-20 Championships in Colombia.

This was the first session where Eusebio Sacristan has been able to have almost all his troops available, after having, throughout the preseason, lots of absences, due to the European Under-21 Championship, the European Under-19’s, and the World Under-20’s championships, as well as the players who trained with the first team. This first session consisted of various drills and mini matches to get the players functioning together.

A few absentees

The only absentees in this first training session were Jonathan Soriano, Muniesa, and Ilie, who are still recovering from their respective injuries, as well as Montoya and Jonathan Dos Santos, who are still training with the first team. None of them appeared in the first group photo of the season.

He was one of our most promising young defenders before he had injury problems and lost his guaranteed start in his team. He holds the record for most caps or something at U16 level and about 2-3 years ago as a 16 year old he came on preseason and was very impressive.

He played a few games this preseason and looked fine, so I think given a run of games and patience he'll develop. He's still just 19. The problem was Montoya is basically breaking through now, and he's 1 year older. So I think he decided he needed to go. He wasn't going to play enough in Barca B either.

He's very fast, good stamina and a genuinely athletic fullback. Naturally, has a good technique and will pass the ball well. If he stays injury free I think he could be a starter for Valencia in 3-4 years?

`Video (Match Highlights):

------------------------

Barcelona's opened their account in the NextGen tournament with a 3-1 win over Celtic in Glasgow.

Over 5,500 came out to see the Tommy McIntyre's Celtic Under-19's face off against the next generation of the La Masia, the academy which famously produced six of the Spain's starting eleven in last years World Cup final.

Adopting the 4-3-3 Barcelona blueprint of the senior side, the visitors enjoyed the better of the opening exchanges, patiently probing the hosts back line for a weakness to exploit and it did not take long for them to find one and take the lead, albeit a touch fortuitously.

Eduard Campabadal Claros escaped down the Celtic left, and with no one to aim at, decided to try his luck from the narrowest of angles, his speculative shot somehow finding its way past Nicholas Feely to give the Catalans a 1-0 lead.

To their credit, the young Bhoys side refused to let their heads drop and striker Anthony Watt, who was a constant menace to the Barca back-four deservedly equalised with 23 minutes on the clock with a superb individual effort.

Picking the ball up in the centre circle, the 17 year-old advanced towards goal, evading a number of challenges before finding the bottom corner of Miguel Banuz Anton's net from just outside the area.

Galvanised by the goal, Celtic came close to taking the lead ten minutesbefore the break, with Watt again instrumental in the build up, cutting in from the left to see his shot palmed away, evading strike partner Paul George, who just failed to make contact with his attempted overhead kick.

The miss was to prove costly for Celtic as they fell behind just moments later, Patricio Gabarron capitalising on a scramble in the box following a Sainz-Maza cross to give Barca a 2-1 half time lead.

Any realistic hope of a Celtic comeback was extinguished barely two minutes into the second period with Maza again involved, his intricate pass finding Jean Marie Dongou who rifled a shot past Feely into the top corner to put Barcelona firmly in control of the fixture.

With a cushion of a two goal lead, Barcelona were happy to stroke the ball about in a manner reminiscent of the senior side which have set the benchmark in world football and could have added to their lead, Ernesto Cornejo twice going close to extending the Barcelona advantage.

The defeat is Celtic's second in the tournament, having lost their first Group 1 fixture 1-0 in Marseille a fortnight ago and the Bhoys now have a mountain to climb if they are to qualify for the next stage, but can take great heart from the fact that for long period of the game they matched a team from possibly the finest academy in world football today.
