Re: Best written TV show?
The Wire is probably the best written TV show, ever. It really encapsulates the concept of a "novel on television". Each season has a distinct plot that manages to stand by itself. It takes its time to create an atmosphere and then quickly escalates the stakes. Moreover, it manages to make the city of Baltimore a character in itself, and an incredibly prevalent one, which is something only very few shows have achieved.
Firefly & Freaks and Geeks have superb character development, so they deserve a mention too.

Re: Best written TV show?
I really enjoyed the Sopranos.
I think Friends also deserve a mention for their characters.
Comedy shows often succeed or fail on how funny, versatile and interesting the characters are and in Friends you can get so much humour out of each character and their chemistry between each other, it's simply genious.

Re: Best written TV show?
Battlestar really was a revelation to me. Blew every other tv show outta the water. Still haven't seen season 4 btw. Season 3 finale resulted in an overload of epic, for me personally, and I couldn't get myself to finish the series...knowing that my life would be incomplete given the knowledge that battlestar is over.
With that said. I've never liked a female character more than Starbuck. Honorable mentions also go out to Gaius motherfkin Baltar. Fellow Battlestar watchers would agree...that guy is a legend.
SO SAY WE ALL ?

Re: Best written TV show?
Prison Break season 1- it was just a constant and intense marathon of top quality drama and suspense. Cliff hanger after cliff hanger that kept you at the edge of your seat several times per episode. A masterpiece in my eyes. Shame it went downhill after season 1.
The Sopranos- Rarely does a show that has 6 seasons maintain such a consistant quality and gets better and better through the years. This is the best show in TV history in my opinion.
OZ- brutal series that pushed the limits and boundaries. The writing was top notch and you can tell that they did intense research to make it real as possible. Racism, Rape, violence, abuse....it had everything and was shocking to watch at times.
These 3 shows are my pick.

It seems none of you are familiar with Lost.
Only show that comes close to it is The Wire (though I've been told The Shield is excellent as well).

First 2 seasons of Lost were mindblowing. I just felt after that, it started to lose momentum and became too fantasy like for my taste.

Re: Best written TV show?
For a comedy, Wilfred I thought was actually well written, I really liked that show to be honest. And in terms of storyline, it was also really well written. It's not thigh slapping humor, but it's got good humor, and for a comedy, a very interesting story line, especially for what is quite a short summer season.
And then I just throw in Scrubs cause it's my favorite comedy of all time I agree with Seinfeld too.

Lost is a great show, but you need to have patience to watch that show
Same can also be said for Breaking Bad, some episodes can be a bit slow
Also heres some Arrested Development

Game of Thrones is just plain epic in writing and visuals. I MEAN WHO THE FRAK KILLS THE HERO IN THE FIRST SEASON?

Agreed. I still watched every episode though...Devil-Is-Red wrote:First 2 seasons of Lost were mindblowing. I just felt after that, it started to lose momentum and became too fantasy like for my taste.
I also love Game of Thrones and It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia. I strongly dislike the Big Bang Theory (since someone mentioned it earlier).

TBH, Game of Thrones doesn't actually HAVE a hero.
I'm reading the books, and no character is the most important or whatever. Each one has a small chunk of importance in his or her own right.
The lack of clear moral distinction is one of the most awesome attributes of the series. Unlike LOTR, where good is very clearly white, and bad is very clearly black or dark, the good and bad in the Song of Ice and Fire series is very very tough to spot. We can almost say there IS no hero or villain.

I can not wait for the next seasons, is it worth reading the first book after I have watched the season or is it fine to skip to the second?

Re: Best written TV show?
from a strictly writing standpoint the daily show has to get a mention... the script is written daily in only 6 hours! no other show of the same quality can say that (colbert report= )
