When you have a dozen lines of chat where only one emoticon is posted per line, then I can't really consider that a chat anymore. There is a line between use and abuse of them. Your post is an example of the malaise, too.

I guess it is more that those memes are getting old fast. It is better you need to work a little more to use them so that they won't get overused (and imo they are overused already).

They're universal internet emoticon language. Overused? I'd say they're a standard. For example, how are you going to know whether someone is trying irony or means something in offensive ways or joyous? -> emoticons.
Memes are the most well known emoticons like ABC in your language. It makes communication easier, notthing of the sort of overused. If we talk about overused Lucas and Xavi smiley top every list.

It's a combination of things.

1) The current memes are already old, busted, and absurdly overused... though the last part is basically a given. Same with Lucas and Xavi. While I didn't remove the Lucas emoticon I won't be adding it and the same would happen with Xavi.

2) Having those as emoticons increases the likelihood of people making posts that contain no words or similar. If that's what you want to do go to an imageboard, not a forum.

3) I don't respond well to being given commands. If people were to actually ASK for things to be added changed, rather than telling me/us what we "need" to do, they might get better results. That said, don't expect me to add back Lucas or any of the painfully tired meme ones just because you ask at this point; people have already done enough to put me off them.
