Quick question.
This isn't a full operating system yet is it?
And if I download it and put it on a disk and install will it replace my windows 7 already on my laptop?

You can install it on a separate partition.
It's quite good, but the Metro UI is very confusing.

^^ When you put in the DVD and begin the install, you will have to create a separate partition.

But note, this is not even a release candidate yet. I'm glad I have two hard drives in my computer. The second allows me to mess with stuff like this. Going to buy some DVDs tomorrow or day after and give it a go. A couple of my friends have already done it and seem to like it.

You can disable Metro UI through the registry if you want to :L
And it's not designed to be a giant phone, it's for TABLETS.

Has anyone bought a win 8 PC or upgraded yet? If so, what's it like? I've seen the demo version, so I know the basics. What I'm really interested in is the little details though. I.e. what little innovations/annoying things that happen when you use win 8

i have been using it for months and just bought the upgrade to use the final version.... so for i am enjoying it alot, as windows itself is alot faster and unlike many people i like the metro style and wishing i had a touch screen laptop right now

i was about to buy the surface but i am gonna wait until the pro comes out, it's a full PC in a tablet

only problem i can see atm is that there aren't enough good apps, but they will come in the coming months, so for now i am using the desktop more then metro... but still i like the metro and the whole being able to control xbox through smartglass

well not everything will be an app, you do still use alot of other applications which aren't MS store apps... for example, MS Office and all the big games which are on the desktop not Metro..

Laptop Magazine interview

LAPTOP: The Windows 8 Switcher displays each Modern style app as its own thumbnail but folds all the desktop apps into a single thumbnail because it considers the desktop itself to be an app. Is this a usability problem?

Budiu: It is confusing, because users have to remember what they’re running in the desktop and go back to that app to resume editing a document in Word, for instance, or creating a chart in Excel. In general, switching between apps is costly for the users – you have to go to the start page, then select the app, and then, for those apps running in the desktop, go to desktop and select it from there. Compare that with older versions of Windows – just one click was needed to choose the running app from the task bar.

switching between apps is easily there is a sidebar that lets your easily multitask and switch between app or you can use alt-tab

i think many of these tech experts really think their readers/users are dumb as hell, because many think win 8 is gonna be too much their users tiny brains to adjust to

Actually, they weren't specifically talking about switching apps. Rather, they talked about switching from metro to desktop (which is an app in windows 8 ) in order to access good old software like Word or other win7 based programs.

As explained by Budiu, it is obviously costly because you have to go to the win8 start page, then choose the desktop app to access windows 7, and then click on the icon of the software that you want to run. Whereas, for the case of traditional windows OS, one can immediately access the software by double clicking the icon.

Honestly, if you don't like Metro, you don't have to use it, and it's pretty much the same as Windows 7 then. I run my Windows 8 laptop without using Metro apps ... because the resolution isn't high enough Mad.

Every software is there to drive the IT market forward. Do you know what Windows 8 stands for?
Expect a boom in touch screen monitor market for the next 3 years. They'll get bigger with better panels, new models every year then they'll come up with a new idea to the money out of your pockets eco smile

Agreed, almost all apps in Win8 is still in preview. So it's not like this is the finished thing.

A long time ago I was using my Zune and wondered why Microsoft doesn't use this design for a phone UI or make a Zone and now it's being used for the phone OS and full OS

Zune from the second gen onwards was soooo underrated cause the first gen did suck but the awesomeness of Zune has carried over into windows banana

If anything you should upgrade for the boot time alone.

The multi-screen usability absolutely sucks balls

Sad

Apparently it wasn't a priority for release and will be released in a future patch Sad
