Well it's obvious Messi is more like a creator where as Xavi is more like a conductor. Xavi more of a playmaker, but Messi can create things out of nothing. Close, voted Messi.

Messi has never played in a play maker role in his entire career,at best he might have player as AM,but its far from a play maker.

Messi had to drop back so deep because possession wasn't being held and nothing at all was being created by the guys behind him. Hence the CM comment, but don't take it literally. He was still clearly playmaker and the only guy shooting off passes.

Xavi by a mile, anyways. That's basically his whole role.

I never meant he lined up as a CM on paper, as that's obvious it never happened but he had to drop so deep he was playing mostly in the center as a midfielder hence CM. Very Happy

As an incisive playmaker, messi as a controlling playmaker xavi. Messi could possibly do what xavi does, xavi can nver do what messi does. That's my take on it. As footballers, Xavi cannot lace messi boots.
