'Either this changes or we kill Spanish football' - Villarreal president Fernando Roig
Villarreal president Fernando Roig has called for changes to football in Spain so that it does not become a two-team show between Real Madrid and Barcelona.
Roig's remarks come in the wake of his side being soundly beaten 5-0 at Barcelona and Real Madrid seeing off Zaragoza 6-0 in the first La Liga matchday.
The Villarreal supremo believes there is a huge gap between 'the Big Two' and the remaining clubs and noted that if nothing is done to solve this problem, La Liga can no longer survive.
"This is the league you want. I sell players to balance budgets but others ask for credit and get it," Roig said after the game.
"If you want the league to have only two matches, then there will only be two matches, but this is not good for football. I give it three to four years. Either this changes or we kill Spanish football.
"We had offers for [Giuseppe] Rossi and Nilmar, but their departures would have weakened the team. The economical differences lead to this."
Still, Roig stated that Barcelona deserved their Monday night win over his club, saying: "They played stupendously and we had a very bad match; one of the worst [ever]."
Questioned about the potential signing of Mallorca midfielder Jonathan de Guzman, Roig was very coy on the subject.
"The Canadian could be a Villarreal player in the next hours, but it could result in nothing," he added.

What?
Every La Liga fan will admit there is no competitiveness to the Big 2, every La Liga fan will admit there is a real issue financially wise outside the big 2....
The only issue people have is the way people are using to portray it for example when Barca beat Villarreal 5-0 its because of the shitty league and when City win 5-1 away from home against a side who reached the QF of the CL last year no one says anything.....
La Liga needs a major shake up though...

But that doesn't mean the teams are bad, it just means there is a very big gap.

Completely agreed, it's getting embarassing. Something must be done to help the rest of la liga.
Valencia and Villarreal have to sell every summer to stay afloat, not helping the competitiveness.

I'm so curious about your Lazio infatuation, yes I have noticed
Apart from Hernanes/Klose/Cisse this team doesn't differ a great deal from one that two seasons ago only just escaped relegation.
Reja was the reason they over performed last year and if it's to be as you say he will again be central. But they've also lost Lichtsteiner and Muslera...
Above Inter, are you predicting a top three finish then? If so why?

Meh, you cant really complain that you have to balance the books by selling. Villarreal are a VERY small club, all small clubs have to do that.
They have a great team, but they are a small club.
You cant complain that Barca get a loan either, we are obviously good for it, which is why it was allowed.
Overall, there is a problem in terms of finance and so on, but his arguement here I dont get.

Financial fairplay will sort all this. Clubs like City and Real need a good slap
