Losing in the charity shield? Not such a big deal.
Despite this, I think City will do well this season.
I dislike Mancini as much as anyone and I dont like nor agree with many of the decisions he makes. I also agreee Man City need someone better long term.
But, the season is long, the window isnt such and I think City will do fine.
He need's to stop playing Barry and Milner in favour of fantastic attacking talents though lol.
Naturally, goes without saying. I think in spite (rather then because of) Mancini, they will do relatively well just based on talent and squad depth.

He could have use Barry to spray ball wide to Johnson and Clichy from the midfield. But City just kept playing too narrow upfront. Wasteful by Mancini!
Barry cant do those things though, he hasnt got particularly great passing range and accuracy and its not like he can carry the ball skillfully into better areas to make the passes easier.

Nah.
He made some very good moves on the ball, but he his only target was the plodding Dzeko who has hardly any quickness and therefore had to make extra touches or play passes which ended up being broken.

Could'nt disagree with you more on this, tell me what a playmaker that is put out of position on the wing by an incompetent manager is supposed to do when his team does'nt have possession?
Plus he created both goals

Re: City choking vs Utd
It's too soon to write off City for the season ahead, but there were some very familiar problems for them today. If they have ambtiions of winning the title, they need to take risks.
I can understand them stating with De Jong, Milner and Toure in midfield; keep it tight at the start and all that. But later on, he could have kept Balotelli on, taken off one of Milner or De Jong and gone with an attack of Dzeko, Balotelli, Silva and Johnson.
One of the more interesting aspects of this season coming up is how Mancini is going to utilise his vast wealth of attacking talent.

This might just be me and my crappy stream (Which wasn't that crappy really), but Silva was playing it WAY too narrow. He didn't spray it wide as much as he should have. He was always looking for a quick give-and-go instead of creating and opening up spaces. All United had to do was stack some players in the middle and that effectively nullified Silva's danger. The only times he did spray it wide, he either over-hit it or took too long to play the ball.

I agree, although Xavi seems to rate him a bit. Anyway, does Mancini have anyone that has a good passing range in the midfield? If he is playing Dzeko, isn't it always better to feed him crosses into the box?

Re: City choking vs Utd
I agree with you jewel, he is laying the foundations of a very good team that will be difficult to beat because of their defensive set-up.
He lacks the courage to take a risk and have faith in his talented squad, maybe a more ambitious coach will take City further, but Mancini is good for now.

Silva should be able to play on the wing effectively, from how I gather it. Plus, was he really on the wing? I hardly noticed, because he was almost always in the central area of the offensive third, or even just midfield.

Silva can play final balls, but Dzeko is too slow and has poor movement. He and City look much better with Tevez and so would they will Aguero. Dzeko ruins more then half of the attacking moves in the final 1/3
But getting into the final third was half the problem today, probably more then half. No connecting player, they need a number 8 in my opinion because they dont have anyone.

Silva's a good player, but his creativity and technical ability is just being wasted playing in a not so fluid system.

Seems like I'm still the only one who doesn't get the hype that surrounds City.
They're really not all that despite the circle jerking among the English press.

If I may comment on that bit in red.
While they do have a lot of depth, they don't have a lot of different options. The players are too similar. Sure, its great to have depth, but its good to have a variety of options so you can handle different situations. Currently, City don't have many options in midfield. They are all similar. Even offensively, the purchase of Aguero doesn't add much variety to the team.

He can play it effectively and he did consistently last year but what is he suppose to do with the opposition is dominating possession?
He is a playmaker in the final third, he is suppose to create for the forwards not to win or keep possession and when the people who are suppose to do that dont do it what more can he do?
City are severely lacking a Sahin type imo.

I agree with you. They are very good defensively but Mancini is too negative.
See them finishing 4th/5th TBH.

Think it was a tactical decision to move him more narrower he started off wide and Mancini moved him in further and they set up pretty much 442 with Balo left Milner right :study:

I agree with you to an extent.
Like I just said, they don't have much variety in their play. When you compare the different types of players at City with the ones at Chelsea or Arsenal for example, there's a huge difference.
I also think their squad depth is misinterpreted as "quality". While its great to have depth, only 11 players can actually start. They keep on buying players that can only replace players in the first XI, not add any sort of variety and that is a big downfall imo.
For example, only one of Tevez or Aguero can actually start (If he is to play well, anyway). But people automatically say: "OMG, City have Aguero now...they are so gonna win the EPL title!". They fail to see that the purchase of Aguero will only actually make a difference if Tevez is injured, and even then...we already saw how City played with Tevez more or less always fit so its not like they are going to improve in any way over that.
Had they bough Sneijder; however, then we can talk about improvement

Anyway I have to say Welbeck's workrate throughout the match was fantastic. Reminded me of Rooney in his younger days.
