Well, one of the amazing things about Messi, and one key reason why Neymar will never be able to come close, is how usually he is not distracted or provoked by being constantly fouled, and how he rarely loses his temper and focus no matter how much opposition player hack him down.

That's one part of what makes him so consistent and so deadly, while if you foul Neymar a few times (and of course both Neymar and Messi are fouled all the time, every game) he will get caught up in it, start acting, or acting out, and will forget to play football, waste his time with bickering, or get sent off himself.
You can worsen Neymar by fouling him, but usually, you can't neutralize Messi in that way.

But I guess in minute 120 of this game even Messis patience and focus was exhausted, who can blame him.
Still a clear red, and a ban will follow to the detriment of his team.

I’m actually really surprised that this has has been Messi’s first red card in the league. I’m sure I’ve seen him act on out on more than one occasion in the past, like that time he pushed a ref in the back, the same week as C. Ronaldo got sent off for doing the exact same thing, only with less power behind the push then there was that time when he seemed to act like a thug, and I remember Firenze referencing his «rent boy tattoos».

I wouldn’t call Messi a dirty player, but he seems to always get away with it, on the occasions when he does act like a thug. I’m sure Harmonica will strongly disagree here, but normally I’d assume or expect that he’d receive no punishment for this type of situation, although he blatantly punched the guy.

Technically this was a supercup game so his league record remains untarnished

Sorry, but if anyone thinks that Messi's attempt at pushing an obstructing player during a counter attack is a red, then his head is so far up his own ass, he might be Donald Trump in disguise.

If that's a red, then the manhandling of De Jong by the same player, just minutes earlier, was a MUCH clearer assault. He handled De Jong, grabibing at him, for a full 20 seconds, and only gets a yellow for that.

The Basque "Warriors" were hugging the ground more than 60s peacekeeping hippies. I was actually rooting for them, but they played the final 15 minutes like the biggest pansies in football.

The discussion does not contextual what the Athletic players did nor anything else the discussion is on Messi and his right card and it is conveniently seemed to be ignored, that his right hand was lashed out in frustration on the counter-attack.

The footage speaks for itself. Athletic roughhousing Barça, who weren't saint themselves, does not negate from Messi's attempted brandish upon the opposition.

The powerful Messi Ali Clay was clearly shoving Villalibre (who was clearly obstructing Messi's path without the ball, which could be considered a foul) aside to try and join the final attack of the game, and it came in more forceful than the hundreds of such shoves in any week because it was more desperate being at the end of the game.

And the context of the match 100% applies for any refereeing decision. The fact that Bilbao were wasting time, committing cynical fouls, and basically manhandling Barca players to stop counter attacks should have weighed in the decision to treat this is a foul (which is a yellow at most) or a violent interaction (which is a straight red).

Not only did the Ref not take in all of that context, but the 2 minutes of extra time that he gave was not nearly enough considering Bilbao time wasting tactics employed in extra time.

Sorry Arq, but your biases are as clear as the lack of bravery of Bilbao's players in the last 15 minutes (which is a shame, since they showed such courage for the rest of the match).

Spence Im not the least bit of a fan of Toral's methods on Athletic. Bielsa to Valverde brought their initial attacking pedigree back only for managers to succeed forward and underutilise talent for an increasingly cynical Leones.

I dont disagree either that it was not the most classy display nor on the fact that Messi was provoked but his swing at the opposition was clear. He barely lashes out but when he does it does tend to be violent if not seething.

And disappointed people forgot to note that Athletic defeated both:

Real Madrid & Barça within the span of 2 games.
