to be fair, Arturo Vidal is, or at least was, one truly amazing midfielder

I agree, always loved his fighting spirit but at 32 years of age he shouldnt be the best we can field

I’ve always liked Semedo. The Barca fans on here didn’t seem all that impressed, the last time I mentioned him on here. What’s the verdict on him now? I mean, he’s no Roberto Carlos, but I feel like a lot of people who are fans of top clubs expect nothing less than world class players in every position these days - although most top clubs would benefit from simply having solid, stable performers (preferably young) over their Busquets, Matic, Modric, and the endless list of over the hill players they are fielding.

There are relatively few elite players that are close to their peak years right now, and the majority of the top clubs are coincidentally going through a transition from the old to the new. Realistically, upgrading on deadweight with players that are reliable enough, would be a lot better than waiting for one of those potentially elite players to emerge, only to risk getting an over-priced and unreliable.. deadweight.

Yeah, Semedo was amazing tonight. He's no Dani Alves but very reliable and easily 2 levels above Sergi Roberto.

Semedo was very bad when he joined Barça, both at attacking and defending. Although his touch immediately impressed me, his passing left a lot to be desired. Combine that with low creativity in attack, with the occasional pass and move which never worked and also countless cases of failing to identify runners going behind him. Having said that, on 1v1 occasions he was already levels above Sergi Roberto even back then.

However he has slowly but surely improved all those aspects. His passing has improved, he feels more comfortable next to Piqué and is more trusting of his ability, therefore improving both his defensive and build up play. His attacking has also improved, he is using his pace more often now and trying to get behind the opposition backline, though I don't think he's scored a single goal for Barça yet. Has he even got an assist?

Anyway, Semedo > Roberto and that gap has just kept increasing as time goes. Roberto peaked around that PSG goal and has been living off his Masia/long term servant/image status for too long. Semedo needs to be our RB, been saying that for like 2 years now.

Read that Dembele is back training so hopefully we can have him instead of Fati who is flashy but not productive. Having said that one can say Dembele can be like that too lol, but u know what I mean, at least Dembele has a much higher ratio of successes. Then we got a good number of midfielders competing for the three spots which is pretty good at this point in time.

Need to wait and see how we do against a top opponent first to see if we have really actually improved though after that disastrous Valencia game.
