Re: Your best films of the decade
Probably, I don't know but that was one of the films that hit me really hard emotionally.

2010: The Social Network
2011: Warrior
2012: Flight
2013: Inside Llewyn Davis. Strong shout out to Prisoners
2014: Whiplash
2015: Mad Max: Fury Road
2016: Arrival
2017: Blade Runner 2049
2018: Eighth Grade
2019: Parasite. Knives Out close behind
I feel like 2018 was such a weak year.
My overall movie of the decade? When I look through it, I think I'm partial to Arrival. The Social Network is up there too. It doesn't have the emotional impact some of the other movies do, but it's one of the more flawlessly built movies I've seen, ever. The writing, acting, story/pace of story, music etc are absolutely perfect. I mean, Fincher with a Sorkin script, to the tune of Reznor? Everytime I put on that film even for 5 minutes I end up watching the whole thing because it's hard to pull myself away.
I'm due for a rewatch of Arrival. I love that movie quite a lot.

Good list, it's very similar to mine.
The two best movies of 2018 are Dragged Across Concrete and Climax and unfortunately barely anybody saw them.

I'll check them out. Feels weird to be putting 8th grade down as my favorite of the year. Don't get me wrong, I think it's a great film. It's just not "best of the year" worthy

Thought Dragged Across Concrete was pretty bad and sloppy.
Brawl in Cell Block 99 was really good though. Craig Zahler is really an interesting pulp filmmaker.

Prefer Brawl over Dragged as well tbh. Dragged "dragged" at some stages of the film
Bone Tomahawk is still easily his most memorable work though, fuck that movie is wild

I rewatched it this week and it just took me back to that scene in the pod. When she say's who's child is that, I was like mf dat ur kid you been dreaming about from the goddamn start. Fucking my mind blew that it was the future and I couldn't stomach some of the incoming tears for the final 10 minutes.
Rewatching it again brought me close to the brink again.

Also do let me know if you rewatch it or remember it enough, I have a theory which is a bit wild and I'd like to get it off my chest.

Re: Your best films of the decade
^^do share your theory, mate.
- my theory:
- My theory concerning this movie has always been the Sapir-Whorf hypothesis of linguistic determinsim/relativity from the first time i watched it. The theory states that our linguistic domains in our brain are interconnected with our environment and the language principals we use, thus language impacts our understanding, insight and relation towards the world. Louise managed to connect linguistically with the aliens, and therefore she received the power of time traveling (or transcending time as we regularly understand it) through connecting with the aliens.
I think it is a decent theory since Louise is the best Linguistics professor in the country as they say in the film.

Re: Your best films of the decade
Yes, I absolutely agree with your theory. I also have a theory that revolves around the story-line:
Please do share your views @EG @CB @RG @Futbol @Kaladin @Hames if you remember the movie.

- Spoiler:
Theory: Abbott = Louise
Lets spare a thought for Abbott. He knew he was going to die since they can look into the future. But during the scene, he still tried telling them to leave over and over again by knocking on the glass early enough for everyone to leave safely.
This to me shows, he wanted to alter the timeline in a way he could survive. Anyways, they don't understand him.
This is the hard part.
We can now see that Costello has left to save himself, knowing it will be him to save the future.
Abbott then accepts his fate and provides them with everything and saves them from the blast, getting mortally wounded in the process but doesn't alter the timeline.
I link this to Louise, she knows down the line that she would lose her child and her love of her life. Ian confesses his love to her and then she has a choice of not going through the lifetime of pain while physically experiencing every second of it starting now.
But like Abbott, as to not alter the timeline, she chose to accept her fate of sorrow and misery.
Both sides of win-win suffered equally to save each other's races. Louise is that for Humans what Abbott was to the Aliens.
The only difference is Costello was able to accept this as they are more aware of time while Ian could not understand and left Louise.
Maybe when Louise told Ian about the fact that she knew, He must have asked how. Ian then maybe understood how all the premonitions that Louise had did not include himself in any of that? He played his role of the story leaving her to play the part of keeping the timeline intact?
What do you guys think?
