As it stands, the Chinese Super League is the only place willing to pay Bale's salary, but they don't want to offer a big transfer fee due to the 100% tax on fees for foreign players over there.

I wonder if, after this Bale debacle, big clubs will start handing out shorter contracts. Unless players are traded between the elite, it's becoming a lot harder to sell players on big wages with the current state of the transfer market. More than ever, it's a case of either huge transfer fee or huge wages, not both. As selling unwanted big earners becomes harder, I'm thinking we may see shorter contracts so it's easier to let those players go.

Either that, or clubs start getting tighter with their wages, but even today, a player on 100k p/w has a limited number of clubs he can play for.

Giving Bale that long extension was a dumb mistake overrating how good he would be long term.

Those big players on huge contract will not accept to join your club on a short deals and given that we are dealing with the very top end of footballers, some club will be willing to give them the contract they want when they are in demand.

take a pay cut to prove something to people he doesn't even know? that doesn't pay the bills. if nobody is willing to pay for his services, it will be foolish of him to take a pay cut in a situation he might not be happy in. he may not like it in china, but hey, make your money. for someone whose carrier has been marred by injuries and as such could end shorter than expected, the dumbest thing he can do is take a pay cut when china is offering something substantial.
