Don't call me James wrote:To me it's always about improving the starting XI. We very rarely actually get this accomplished in transfer windows.
Last season's main starting XI:Mignolet
Clyne - Lovren - Sakho - Moreno
Can - Milner
Lallana - Firmino - Coutinho
Origi
New starting XI:Karius
Clyne - Matip - Lovren - Milner
Can
Lallana - Wijnaldum
Mane - Origi/Firmino - Coutinho
Karius, Matip, an Mane are great signings and instantly improve us. The jury is out on Gini to see if he actually improves on Milner/Hendo last season. No LB means Milner is essentially our new starting LB. That's the only weakness in the team we did not address with a transfer, even though we tried. I have no problem with fixing it in house and letting Milner play there until we find the right player.
Grujic is a star in the making but certainly one for the future and is a great arrival. Klavan is an improvement on Skrtel, a solid CB off the bench. Experienced Manninger improvement on Bogdan 3rd choice GK who will never get game time so no reason to dwell.
And then we did a wonderful job getting rid of deadwood and got great fees for them.
So Gini is a questionable big money signing. LB was left unaddressed in the market. And we missed out on our biggest target midfield Mahmoud Dahoud. So certainly all of these take away some points from window.
Overall bringing 3 sure starting improvement and possibly a 4th, could be one of the best summers we've had. Name me the last time we brought in 4 starting improvements in the last decade?
I'd say 7.5/10. Could be 8 depending on Gini.
I can't help saying this repeatedly but the one summer in which Liverpool had big money to spend Kenny Dalglish wasted most of it. If only Klopp could have had that money in this summer instead, a title challenge was a possibility.

You should stop repeating then because you are wrong.
2011 summer: £54.7m spent (the Kenny summer you're talking about)
2012 summer: £28.4m spent (first summer under BR)
2013 summer: £44.8m spent
2014 summer: £117m spent
2015 summer: £73.8m spent
2016 summer: £67.9m spent (first summer under Klopp)
Last 3 summers we've spent more than the Kenny season. This summer we had negative net spend so we had plenty of money to dish out on transfers. Klopp just doesn't want to spend for the sake of spending.

Did Kenny spend all that money in one summer? Maybe not. I don't remember the figures exactly but I do remember a few players being bought for very high amounts, contributing very little and being shipped out soon. Your post suggests Brendan Rodgers wasted even more money. Somehow I cannot recall that so well. Strange because it is a more recent thing. Maybe rather than looking at only the amounts we should consider inflation as well. What may have seemed a large amount then would be more like pocket change now given the summer we just saw. As for Klopp not wanting to spend more money, it's possible but I have my doubts. As a manager would he not want to make at least one marquee signing and/or build a team he feels is capable of challenging for the title?
Can we make a full list of the flop expensive purchases made by Liverpool in the last several years? That should help to explain better where things have gone wrong.

Bumping this thread.
Curious to see how everyone rates their window for this summer. I will do Chelsea in a bit.

Re: Rate your Transfer Window
Not sure if should I go with B+ or A-
Transfers out:
Selling Morata was not ideal at all. Do not care what Nick or Sports about his ability as a footballer (ok I do care a bit) but his goals were vital and considering we do not have an adequate back up for either Ronaldo or Benzema, him going actually left a proper striker gap. James and Danilo were very much expendable and had no effect on the team really. Coentrao is a non-entity. Not renewing Pepe for at least a year didn't look too good either which is a bit souring. Wonder if I missed out on any other departures?! Anyway, not properly replacing Morata was pretty short sighted of us.
Transfers in:
Acquiring both Theo Hernandez and Dani Ceballos is a big deal especially with the price the club paid (compared to the madness taking place currently). Bringing back Vallejo also made sense but I do not trust him. At all. Too teddy bear-ish. Should I put Vinicius in this? I mean, Madrid did purchase him on a future transfer. Nah. Um, those 3 acquisitions really gave the club a good depth for a long season so that is always a good sign.
Conclusion:
If it weren't for not getting a proper back up striker, this would have been a perfect transfer window for Madrid. Acquired 2 highly rated Spanish youngsters and replaced 2 essentially "dead wood" players in James and Danilo. Coentrao doesn't count as he never mattered.

Chelsea addressed their main issues by signing a defender wingback, midfielder and CF. We also improved onBabaAina by signingAlonsoZappacosta andimprovingreplacingon AmeliaBegovic withEduardoCabellero.
But Chelsea spent much of the summer chasing shadows,Manolas, Nainggolan and KoulibalyAlex Sandro, Lukaku and Ox are notable here. WhileKanteBakayoko andBatshuayiMorata are the best we could hope for,Alonso and LuizZappacosta left me feeling like we could have done better. Unless Conte gets the best outof these twohim, Chelsea could well be trying to sign acouple ofnew defenderssooner rather than later. Only time will tell.
Another positive is that most of our key players were kept.
Overall, 7/10. A good summer in terms of positions fixed, but some transfers could go either way. We could have done better, but we could have also done a lot worse.
Jeez, last summers rating basically identical to this summer.
I think we're better off this summer though, despite all the negativity.

Re: Rate your Transfer Window
Our transfer window I thought was a 8/10
Positives:
- We got rid of James who was nothing but problem and replaced him with Ceballos
-We got Theo to back up Marcelo. A position we've been unable to fill for 5 seasons
-We got Llorente back to be Casemiro's understudy. We collapsed against Barca because of a lack of DM when we had to take out Casemiro
-Got rid of Danilo. A running meme and replaced him with the promising Achraf
-We passed on DeGea and decided to trust Navas instead
-Passed on Mbappe this seasons Pogba
Negatives:
-Refused to give Pepe his deal and made him leavr through the backdoor. I am not entirely convinced by Vallejo yet. Jury is still out on that one
-Let Morata leave without replacing him. Instead trusting Mayoral who isn't good enough
If we'd just managed to replace Morata or convinced him to stay this window would have been a 10/10

these are not positives. We basically failed to improve the team further. We should have kept Morata and get Mbappe in reality. get rid of the BeaBweight.
10/10 would of been
ins: De Gea, Hakimi, Vallejo, Theo, Llorente, Ceballos, Mbappe
outs: Navas, Danilo, Pepe, Coentrao, James, Bale, Benzema
instead, we damaged the team. ok we improved the midfield, (which was already super class), weakened the attack even more with Morata leaving and no Mbappe. We'll also have an older and slower Benzema and an older and slower Bale. Defense is good. I trust the youngsters.
5/10 because we signed young promising players. otherwise it was a shit summer. The only times we won the league since Ronaldo came occured when we had a good striker. In 11-12 we had Higs and last year we had Morata. Now we have to count on Benzema

Re: Rate your Transfer Window
For Juve:
In:
Szcezsny
Howedes
De Sciglio
Bentancur
Matuidi
Bernardeschi
Douglas Costa
Out:
Neto
Alves
Bonucci
Lemina
Zaza
Romagna
Cassata
Rincon
Mandragora (loan)
Kean (loan)
Benatia and Cuadrado were permanent. Good looking prospects like Orsolini and Del Fabro were signed and loaned out.
We went all out with the forward signings to fix the 0 depth we had last year after the formation change to 4 attackers. Berna and Costa plus hopefully a fit Pjaca will make a world of a difference. Those two should eventually bench Cuadrado and Mandzukic.
Bentancur looks like areal gem, he already played and should find a good amount of space with Khedira's and Marchisio's injuries. Matuidi isn't too exciting but its the kind of player we needed. He'll compliment Pjanic well and should be a great addition to our lightweight midfield.
Alves was a nonfactor for 90% of our season so that doesn't really matter much, but Bonucci's departure is hard to fix. The CB depth is huge and Howedes was just signed too. Rugani has already started the first 2 games. Its a big blow but its already covered as well as one could hope for.
Szcezsny is transfer I simply don't understand from an Arsenal and Roma perspective. He improved so much and played so well last season and yet we got him for like 10m. Fantastic transfer, huge improvement over Neto. Should make for a smooth transition from Buffon.
8/10
Killed it with the attack and GK. Even though Bonucci is well covered, selling him still sucks. De Sciglio has a lot of improving to do if he wants to start for us. Midfield has 2 nice additions and is improved, yet its not perfect. Sold the deadwood for great money. Overall another very good summer with good signings made to continue the transition that we started last year from the old guard to younger players.

Jjuve 7.5/10
-very good additions in: Blaise, Costa, Bernardeschi
-3 points substracted cause we lost D.Alves, very important player; who says he is too old and done, clearly doesn't watch him closely
-De Sciglio needs at least 6 months for rehabilitation. Guy spent like 6 years in a mental institute
-0.5 points added cause we gave Bonucci to a rival. Can't defend his life if not surrounded by proper defenders. Will gave us a lot of fun when marking Dybala. Yeah, other than that he's very good in posession.

An overhaul of the back 4, 10/10, nothing bad to say here. Literally 4 new starters, exactly what we needed.
Midfield: 6/10, Kessie and Biglia are great additions, but more is needed, out bench is spread thin now, our only backups are Locatelli, Montolivo and Mauri. Hakan can fill in, but he isn't that convincing in that role. If Bonavenutra gets injured we are screwed until he's back.
Forwards: 7/10, the addition of Cutrone has given Montella some hard choices to make, the main issue here is the LW spot where Bonaventura and Hakan fill. If one gets injured, the other gets shifted to LCM and Lord Borini starts, which is what has been happening so far. Kalinic a signing made in case Silva and Cutrone cant bag them goals. Suso the only RW on the team, its RIP if he's injured. This is the area that needed most signings, instead we got 2 strikers and Lord Borini. This is prime banter era stuff.

INs
Rom Luk 9/10 - Address goal scoring problem (against fodder teams that is) Mou will PtB against the big boys anyway - Check
Matic 9/10 - Give Pogba license to roam forward- Check
Lindelof 5/10 - Depth in defense - Not quite checked
(Looks pretty ordinary so far. But could be that the kid is still adapting. After all not everyone can do a Bailly and beast from the word go)
Ibra resign - 6/10
Overall 7.5/10
OUTs
Trasfers
Wayne Roonay 10/10 Friggin Finally we got rid!
Januzaj 8/10 Could have become the next big thing but atitude simply not good enough.
Loans
TFM to Crystal Palace 8/10 Looks a great deal as of now. The only problem seems to be Palace looks crap and they might sack FdB soon.
Pereria to Valencia 6/10 Thought this could have been his breakout season finally. Alas, he was loaned out again. Not sure how much he is going to play in a club like Valencia. So... yea thats that.
Overall 8/10
Conclusion
Could have ideally added a winger and a LB as well. Blind at LB looks our weakest link right now. Hopefully the rightful heir to the iron throne Luke Shaw will return and stake his claim soon.
Have a bloated squad. Dont know what's the likes of Ashley Young doing still in the club. Should have sold Smalling too.
All in all. Yea a 7 -ish/10. Early days. The people fapping about Matic, they havent seen him face a real test yet.

No CB or a DM. 0/10 for both.
Solanke 6/10 : Great potential, Could do well. But he don't really count atm.
Salah 9/10: Thought he was a luxury when we first signed him but man he's good.
Robertson 6/10: Good early performances, Add's squad depth. Dunno how this will turn up.
Ox 7/10: Good signing assuming he's fit.
Keita could be one of the shrewdest transfers in the history or the worst business decision of this club. NA
Overall 5.5/10
Not solved key issues, Going in again with a bit of depth but a mess at the back. Going to be another crazy year.
