you don't seem to realize the defensive prowess and contribution of both Matuidi ( a DM by trade ) and Verratti and Motta's physical decline and his decreasing defensive abilities in the last year .

i don't see a single reason why a slick CM like Gundogan wouldn't be able to play in that midfield .
