The pair come into the game on the back of respective setbacks in the week leading up to it. Chelsea face having to bounce back from a humiliating 5-3 defeat at the hands of arguably their biggest rivals Tottenham at White Hart Lane on New Years Day, while Newcastle were rocked mid-week by the sudden departure of embattled manager Alan Pardew to Crystal Palace, with the Englishman's former assistant John Carver taking the reigns on a temporary basis until a new permanent boss can be recruited, resulting, however, in the club not experiencing the usual uptick in form following a beleaguered gaffer's departure, and not having won either of their 2 matches since.

The corresponding fixture last term ended in a rout for the Blues catalysed and effected by Eden Hazard, who struck a hattrick on the day through goals in the 27^th, 34^th, and 63^rd minutes.

The reverse fixture this season just a month previous, however, was slightly a different matter. Papiss Cissé having come off the bench struck twice in 21 second-half minutes to condemn José Mourinho's men to their first defeat in any competition of the season and end at last all talk of a possible Invincibles campaign, a late Drogba consolation to claw the Londonders back to 2-1 notwithstanding.










The recent meetings between the sides at Stamford Bridge have seen the Blues fair quite well. The Londoners have racked up 6 wins in the last 9 clashes between the two in the last decade, with just 1 defeat, a record José Mourinho will be keen on extending come Saturday having seen his side pick up just 1 point from their last 6.

We had a bad game against this guys the last time. Hopefully playing at home would be to our advantage. We need to win this game badly just so that we can shake off our last defeat.

We do, also, it will put pressure on City to win.

Great preview Shed, like always. I know it's a repetitive thing to say, but it still takes you time and effort and I for one enjoy it so I think it's right to acknowledge your work and thank you for that.

As for the match, this is where we have to show we're strong. I expected that sooner or later we were going to have a bad patch of form, it's impossible to keep the start of the year's pace, everything is still in our hands.

We're conceding a lot of avoidable goals and the frequency of it makes me think it's not a coincidence, but at least now it's fixable. For example last season it happened against PSG and we were almost out, it happened against Atletico and we went out. Now there's still a lot to play in the PL and the CL is a month away.
