Re: Marco Polo | Netflix Original
It's back
4 episodes in. Kublai showing his GOATness early on. He'd hold his own in Westeros, 100% sure of that. Hundred Eyes with some of the best lines again this season.
Lacking of a good villain like Sia Jidao though. Ahmad isn't enough and neither is Kaidu so far.

Interesting season, not as good as the first, but a lot of character development this season moving into an uncertain season 3.

Imo it was as good as the first one. I know what you mean but keep in mind that the 1st season was special (being new and all of that). Tis season is as good, the action starts straight away as season 1 has already laid the ground. A lof of character development as you said. The mongol prince for instance is a very likeable character now.
Looking forward to season 3. this new enemy is nothing like the ones before.

This is the first show outright cancelled by Netflix isnt it? Not shocked though. Cant believe they were spending ~10 MILLION an episode when the main actor, whoever playing Marco Polo, has the thespian skills of a kid in their first lead production of a junior high production. Surprised it even survived 2 seasons.
I got 3 episodes in before I checked out. Liked Kublai, but everyone else was meh. Naked Kung Fu? Didnt know whether or not to have a wank or be offended

Nah, they cancelled Lillehammer, Bloodline and Hemlock Grove too.
They are just not as prolific as other networks so when they do cancel shows, it tends to be after a lot more consideration and because of unsustainable losses, like this one.
Loved the show, but a sensible business move.

TBF to Netflix, they always give shows at least 2 seasons before cancelling a show. They don't leave the fans out to dry.
Personally I think if they were going to try to do the whole "white man in Asia" thing they would've been far better off adapting Shogun, which has all the ingredients of a great premium cable show (book is considered a classic and has brand recognition and a following, plot has GRRM-like twists, etc) , rather than reinvisioning Marco Polo as a ninja.

Ah I see. This is the first time I have ever noticed them cancelling something though. Other ones flew under my radar.

Thing is, at least not today, there is really no reason to do the "White man in Asia" angle. In the past I could see it being a familiar face to show audiences a scary/foreign culture so that they could relate, but is that really needed now?
I mean, younger folks in the west now are growing up with Kpop, and even Kdramas. They don't need a western face to help them to relate to another culture. If the story was Just about Kublai, and it was named Kublai, the series would have been a lot better. I know that would have been a big risk with the costs associated with this, but in the end you gamble high risk and you are able to get high rewards.

What's the last major success in US TV with a minority in the leading role?

There have been a few in recent times.
Empire on Fox seems a big one. The most important recipe for success always depends on good actors and a compelling story. Marco polo had both of these with Kublai.
In all honesty his story was compelling enough to really stand on its own. This was Asia's Napoleon. A guy who took over most of the world until he ran into the Typhoons, and this is from a guy who would surely not exist if Kublai had his way in invading Japan because every major clan would have died since there was not even a word in the language for surrender at that point.
Making the story about him wouldnt have made it cheaper to produce, but it would have made it more popular with the critics.

Some might say House of Lies....Don Cheadle has been in the Emmy and Golden Globe hunt pretty regularly.
Edit: Oh and there's Scandal and How to Get Away with Murder.
