Have we really abandoned Casillas?
So, yeah, much like the rest of the Spanish team, Iker had a World Cup to forget...
I see nobody want to support the fact that he remains an elite goalie.
Did you forget the several last ditch saves he made against Dortmund in the CL quarters? Did you forget the YEARS of service he's given the club? Or do you all really think he's past it?
Form is temporary, Class is permanent. We let him go to another team and we lose our captain, our golden boy and a great player... we will regret it.
Get off the GL bandwagon

Re: Have we really abandoned Casillas?
I'm all for Casillas to stay and start. he deserves the opportunity to prove himself again and be back at his best.
give him time, if plays like how he did at WC, then we can bench him. but not now.

Re: Have we really abandoned Casillas?
I feel the same way...no disrespect to navas, nor all these goalies we have been linked with, but none of em strikes me as really better than iker....i mean, really, navas? levante's former goalie (levante, the fact they've remained in the league with their dyer financial situation, is worthy of praise, a lot of their players have part time jobs), is the guy to take over or fight for a position with St. Iker?
Maybe i'm just old school and clinging unto the past, but with faith from the manager and consistent playing time, Iker should be back on his feet no problem...the guy hardly got enough football two seasons ago, and last season whilst he played in ucl and copa, the rate at which those games are spaced out means he probably hardly got into his groove....If Iker were to leave, I wouldn't blame him. The guy has been embarrassed enough- being benched by lopez, who though good in his own right, I recall him playing second fiddle at sevilla; now could be benched by navas, former levante goalie...the worst embarrassment was being benched by ADAN.
Wait, let it resonate and sink in....Iker, arguably the best goalie at this club (no disrespect to bodo illgner, who i watched play and was great in his prime), Iker was benched by ADAN....ADAN. smh. How do you expect someone to have confidence when being told to play second fiddle to ADAN?

Re: Have we really abandoned Casillas?
Iker does not deserve any of the crap he has gotten from some Real Madrid fans. It all came about when he was called the mole by Mourinho but have we already forgotten how before him it was supposedly Raul who was the mole. It's funny that it's only our legends targeted but somehow Raul escaped the scapegoating but Iker didn't. Maybe we should've gotten Mourinho to feast all over his name like he did with Ikers for people to believe it.
Iker had a WC to forget but he was great for us all season bar the two blunders vs Atleti. Maybe this vacation was all he needed to clear his head. I would not mind him starting if he stays because I already know what I'll get from him

He doesn't deserve the crap you're right.
But he's not as good as he was before and you're letting his past accomplishments and form put you all denial.

Re: Have we really abandoned Casillas?
People are so fixated on a handful it's unbelievable. For the whole of last season plus WC Iker had 4 bad games that's it. He was great for the rest helping us win two trophies and maintaining his record of never losing a final.

Re: Have we really abandoned Casillas?
Like I said... Dortmund QF in CL... If not for Casillas, we wouldn't have won the CL
Re: Have we really abandoned Casillas?
Falcaopunch has a point, Iker's form was dropping, but even with that he was still better than most goalies...his form dropping wasn't because he conceded goals from free kicks (since he started his career free kicks have always been his cryptonite) but he started making spills here and there. that said, when your best goalie is facing a dip in form, you encourage him, you dont bench him for adan immediately because of some feud....imagine cristiano not scoring after lets say 4/5 games, u don't bench him for some kid from castilla, and tell him that kid is doing better than he is...
goalies facing a dip in form is very common, Buffon, Khan, Seaman, etc have all faced a dip in form, the difference is they had the confidence of their managers, clubs and fans to see them through it and get back to their best...iker isn't a machine, hell, even machines go haywire at times...a dip in form was used as a tool to ostracize him due to rumors of him being a mole (rumors mind you that despite what everyone says, we still haven't confirmed)...and halamadrid2 is correct, at one point raul was used as a scapegoat and called a mole...madrid fans only went back to praising him after he left and was doing well at schalke...he was super criticized for everything in his last 4 for 5 years at madrid, even for things he had absolutely no powers to control e.g. if we couldn't sign a certain player, people would find a way to blame raul. Unlike iker though, raul had passed his best and there where better options up front. with iker, i'm not sure any of these names are even good as he is

Re: Have we really abandoned Casillas?
Casillas should stay. He was impressive last season and was getting back to form. One bad WC game shouldn't change anything. There's no need for Navas imo. Lopez and Casillas can continue to rotate. If we want a new GK, we should go for someone elite.

Re: Have we really abandoned Casillas?
I would rather he start, than Lopez does tbh. Doesn't make sense to replace a 32 year old with another 32 year old. Rather we'd get a young talented GK.

Re: Have we really abandoned Casillas?
We as fans can say and write what we want, if the club deems him surplus to requirements, then that my friends is that. It's the harsh reality of Real Madrid, when they club is done with you, it's done. You get the Golden Handshake and you go on to newer pastures, so to speak. You think Di Stefano, Butragueno, Hierro, Raul, Santillana didn't have more to offer, that class was permanent as oppose to how form can be quite temporary?!
I would always like Iker and cannot write or say a meaningful bad word about him but we are all seeing the decline, so is the club and those in charge are just continuing what RM has been doing long before most of were born.

No, I mean dying moments when they were 2-0 up and were super close to making it 3-0, putting the tie back in the balance. Casillas made a few vital interventions
Re: Have we really abandoned Casillas?
this is the situation of our keepers:
1 comebacks to training early and is reported to be in fantastic shape physically. trains and shows commitment to win the job
the other takes his sweet time on the beach somewhere, after a crap world cup and a disastrous CL final. Not even mindful that he has to comeback and compete with the other guy, as if he played so much last year that he needed extra vacation and was tired...
please stop all the emo stuff about what Iker used to be. He aint that anymore, it's over.
Iker is conceited and arrogant in the way that he behaves. If he was mindful that his position at the club was threatened, he would have comeback way earlier to give Diego a run for his money.
There will be a n1 gk, and a n2. Diego is going to kick his ass all kind of ways and bench him into leaving madrid.
Oh and did i mention Navas
Casillas is done, like Raul was years ago and it's time to move on. we will remember him for the nice things.

Of Course Lopez tries hard lol. he was a bench warmer at Sevilla .
Last year in Liga we saw what he can do at his best. nothing. pure Mediocrity.

Re: Have we really abandoned Casillas?
you dont get it do you? it's not about diego being better, it's about Diego being a much more committed professional. it's not even him that will start. Last time we saw Iker in la liga he was so bad Antonio Adan benched him, it's not like he is a step up himself.
Navas is coming, and navas will bench both. realistically they are fighting to play the copa del rey

You're a mourinho fan now ? that was pure stupidity. he completely destroyed his gk's confidence, after he said that if there is one GK who can win Balon d'Or that's Iker.

Re: Have we really abandoned Casillas?
I am not a mourinho fan, but i have no time to argue with people who think Casillas didnt deserve to be benched, he was playing like crap. The way mourinho did it was wrong, but Casillas needed to sit down, he was horrendous.

Re: Have we really abandoned Casillas?
Mourinho did a lot of things but destroying Iker's confidence is not it. In fact, Adan was the man who needed counselling, poor guy.
Iker's decline is happening and the club sees it. Even Diego sees it and is capitalizing on it by showing way more professionalism and burning that midnight oil. Yeah, Iker is way more talent but when has talent been the be all and end all of a coach's choice.

Re: Have we really abandoned Casillas?
Iker has been awful for quite sometime not even counting the WC, he was horrible before he got benched and was costing a lot of points too, no need to pretend that the falling out with mou was the main reason.
Iker problem is he tries to do too much, and ends up failing most times, when he stands his ground and just focuses on shot stopping, he is elite no problem but he is digging a hole for himself or he plans to leaves, either way deserve to start over diego fact

Re: Have we really abandoned Casillas?
He was fantastic in CL. I remember him being the difference maker against juve and Dortmund. For some reason people only have short term memory and remembers only from CL final onwards. Hilarious thing is most of them are basing their judgement on that hilarious Spain side and not what he did with real Madrid last season.
Re: Have we really abandoned Casillas?
He definitely still has it in my opinion...
Nick, you can talk about him being unproffessional... but perhaps he took a holiday so that he could get away from the public eyes...
Can you imagine the wrath of the Spanish public after the World Cup? Would you want to have to deal with that?
Goalkeepers peak in their 30s, and letting Casillas rot on the bench now that he's finally in his 30s is retarded to me.
Lopez cannot make the kind of saves Casillas can... plain and simple, he doesn't have those kind of reflexes.
Don't get me wrong, I really like Diego as well, but Iker deserves to play.
And frankly, this practice of treating players like toys that can just simply be discarded when we're "done with them" is appalling.
You wonder why Perez makes 80ME signings like James that aren't necessary?
It's because of the materialistic, disloyal BS like this.
Show some loyalty as fans and maybe the club management will stop making impulse buys and maybe, just maybe, players will feel like more than mere objects and perform better.
I actually regret asking the question.
