Who will go through?
Re: [QF] Belgium - Argentina
Most knockout games are pretty dry affairs, as far as I can remember.

Re: [QF] Belgium - Argentina
Higuain this game though holy crap
That run where he bent over Kompany and then hit the bar
Messi was alright but he should have buried that last chance

Re: [QF] Belgium - Argentina
Basically it was the replay of Germany-France
for Belgium same thing said for France : the overall result is good because it is quarter final against a team most rated, but anyway I waited something of better, a different attitude because there are ways and ways to lose. No a real reaction after that goal.
It was really the replay
on the other hand I think Wilmots manages the Belgium just because he was a great Belgium player ( I can remind him , lost a Uefa Cup for his goal) in 90's. Nothing more. Not so adapted to manage a team with quality players.

Belgium have talent but their coach and overall decision making sucks.
Not too many Argentine fans will mind if this "fluke" team can conjure up two more "flukes" and win this world cup.
As for Belgium they were hopeless today. Other than some of Kompany's last ditch defending and Coutois' stoppage time stop, they probably did nothing right today. Lost the ball too often. Struggled to get it back. No dribbling ability. Terrible final passes. Hardly a sight of goal.
I think playing just two central midfielders against our three was a mistake, especially when one of them was Fellaini.
Eden Hazard tonight may have come up with his career worst performance but then De Bruyne, Mirallas, etc. were hardly impressive either.

Griezmann, Pogba, Matuidi and Benzema have been exposed in this World Cup. Pogba still has time on his side though of course.
Anyway, France went out a round too late. Easily the worst game of the tournament, Nigeria would have been a better opponent for the Germans.

Well, it seems to work with that as well.

Re: [QF] Belgium - Argentina
France were better than Belgium I agree. However if Belgium were 2/10 then France were 4/10.
Belgium played some disgusting route 1 hoofball that went nowhere. At the very last minute when Mertens finally plays an intelligent ball to Lukaku they creat a good chance
Pathetic crossing as well. All in all Belgium should be ashamed of themselves considering how many decent players they have. Only Courtois was good (Messi whiffing a 1v1 )

There are no fluke winners in this tournament, not after the semi final stage.
If Argentina are serious about winning they need to step up their game.

the difference is that nobody overhyped france.
nobody was annoying us about france for the past 3 years and how they're going to be the next big thing.
hell , nobody gave france a shot to qualify to the world cup after the first ukraine game.
and even after that, france was the majority's pick for " big team to exit in the first round " on GL .
not to mention that france actually had some convincing performances in this tournament ,something that belgium couldn't do against lesser opposition .
so yeah , not comparable at all

Re: [QF] Belgium - Argentina
Belgium are shit, they been lucky all tournament and first elite team they face handles them with relative ease.
Before anyone says "only 1-0 doe" Romero basically had nothing to do all game.
Anyway why are Belgium so hyped to begin with? Witsel, De Bruyne, Vertonghen, Alderweireld, Fellaini, Mertens and Lukaku are EL standard players.
The way people talk about them you would think they all going to latter stages of CL every year, yet they only have 3 players who belong in that class.

I don't need three goals per game but what I want to see in knock out matches is a CONTEST. Two sides both showing that they are capable of going through. Some twists and turns. Audience on tenterhooks till the end as to who would go through. In these three matches we knew the winner after 15 minutes. International football is probably at it's lowest ever point.

Far enough. In fact I actually want that. In the semi finals I want to see two proper contests unlike the quarter finals. Otherwise in spite of the goals galore in the group stages and some individual moments this for me will probably be the worst world cup ever. It's mainly the quality of the knock out rounds that defines the quality of a world cup for me.
As for Argentina we played better today than we did against Switzerland. Maybe we can raise our game as per the level of the opposition.

Hopefully Hazard has the game of his life and leads Belgium to the win. Messi will be labeled a flop because he couldn't get things done despite playing for the mighty Argentina

Honestly, how do Barca fans feel seeing Messi get stuck in?
Last time he showed that kind of effort was like back in 2011

Tbf you can apply this logic to every team left, none of them have been very impressive performance wise.
One constant theme between them all, is they all have made great strides defensively as the tournament has progressed.
