Who will win between USA and Belgium?
Re: R16: Belgium vs USA - 1st July

thoroughly enjoyed watching almost every match. The round of 16 was among the best one, from last 3 world cups which i have closely followed and probably also in last 4 WCs.
That brings me to the question of all those who went out who earned our respect and/or sympathy most? My guess is Chile because they made it so close and even on paper they look qualified to make the last eight. What do you all think?
Re: R16: Belgium vs USA - 1st July
I also have to agree with Chile....that was truly a pretty shocking result. It's not at all hard to see them progressing. It just wasn't on the cards in the PK shootout.

Re: R16: Belgium vs USA - 1st July
For me it is Mexico, as I thought they were actually the kind of better team on the night.
On the whole, all games were close, with many going into extra time, so the great thing is that all of the teams showed they deserved to be at that stage and there were no uninteresting games.

How was the Chile result shocking? They were not favorites.
Algeria for me.We all knew how good Chile,USA etc were.Algeria in the other hand were 100% underdogs and went out face to face with the best NT in the world.

Re: R16: Belgium vs USA - 1st July
He meant taking Brazil to the pens was shocking. Any way, Chilie,Mexico and Algeria to an extend showed real fight to some of the top teams in the tournament. Chilie gets my vote for being the toughest of that lot, their pressing was exceptional, game plan was superb for a knock out tournament and were just plain unlucky with the Penalty shoot out.
Regarding this game,Belgium were much better team. They created chance after chance but an unbelievable performance from Thimmy Howard prevented what wouldve been a 5-0 in normal time. That was undoubtfully best GK performance of the world cup.Belgiums shet finishing let them down too. USA looked awful for 115 minutes, despite their heroics in their last 15 minutes.

Wouldn't say that either, Mexico and Chile were both expected to be hard fought games in South American circles.McLewis wrote:Ganso wrote:How was the Chile result shocking? They were not favorites.

IMO Algeria have been the overachievers of the tournament. They had the lowest odds of winning coming into the tournament and almost kicked out Germany in a last 16 match.

Re: R16: Belgium vs USA - 1st July
Algeria eliminating Germany would've indeed been the shock of all shockers. However, for me....I honestly expected Chile to get the better of Brazil as they looked every bit the match for them in that game. The fact that they bottled it in PKs is what shocked me personally.BarrileteCosmico wrote:Wouldn't say that either, Mexico and Chile were both expected to be hard fought games in South American circles.McLewis wrote:Ganso wrote:How was the Chile result shocking? They were not favorites.

I hope it's sooner rather than later. Some of us are a little farther along in life and don't have all that much time to wait.
Oh well, watching the US play in the World Cup is good enough.

USA looked awful, save the last like 10-15 mins when it was too late. Tim Howard on the other hand was amazing.

Re: R16: Belgium vs USA - 1st July
i feel vindicated, algeria did just as good as i expected.
people need to look past the non-fancy name of the country and actually watch some football sometimes.
how ridiculous is that algeria was rated " the worst team " in the world cup in many polls and according to the bookies ?

All of the 16 saves by Howard vs Belgium. Highest number of saves ever in a World Cup match.

Re: R16: Belgium vs USA - 1st July
Jesus what an entertaining match this was....finally watched it. Probably the best game so far. USA were so attacking and open though it seems Belgium found it easy to open them up. That extra time though especially after going 2-0 down, what a response by USA and shows again how a game can completely change by a goal ffs Belgium were lucky to survive in the end. Credit to both teams though, both go for it, great entertainment.

There is a lot more that should be said about TEAM work and how it can at times overcome world class players.
