Meh, Cristiano is clearly a club football guy. International football just ain't his thing. Mind you, Portugal after the class of 89 and 91 really isn't that good.

This holds for both Messi and CR7... you cannot get into the conversation of being one the best footballers ever without a great WC. Portugal and Argentina are not scrub teams. There's no excuse. It doesn't mean that your team has to win the competition or even get into the final 4. But it does mean that you need to stand out....

Portugal are not a scub team.... they've always been a darkhorse contender in every competition even before Ronaldo. If you're playing for Cameroon or Ecuador.... then you have an excuse. Playing for a NT that is considered in the top 10 teams in every competition they enter is nowhere near being a scrub team.

They missed every Euro except 84 and only got they act together after the class of 89 got in their prime in 96. Not to mention they only started consistently qualifying for the WC in 2002.
I think Sport is giving Portugal a lil too much credit. At the same time, he is correct in saying being called best in the world (CR) or one of the best of all time (Messi) with only 2 WC goals isn't all that right...

What Portugal have atm: A bunch of players that used to be good, but are passed their prime. And those that are fresh, are average at best with no experience or individual game winning prowess. ~~> Hence scrubness.

Messi was good WC06 when he was featured and had actually great WC10, and he was great against Bosnia. Miss fake here though has been carbage in every WC.

Argentina is getting overrated based on their forwards, i'd take portugal any day over them considering they actually have balance to their team.
