Super Data Research, who released research earlier this year stating that Riot Games made $624 million in revenue for League of Legends in 2013 and that Dota 2 made around $80 Million, has put out a new report centered on eSports in collaboration with Newzoo.
The report states that viewership across all eSports titles has doubled within the last year, peaking to over 71 million by the end of 2013. Almost half of those viewers, 31.4 million, come from the United States where males account for 70% of frequent viewers and participants. The report finds that the majority of U.S. viewers are males between 21 and 34 years old. The average eSports viewer watches 19 times a month, with a session length of 2.2 hours.
While men represent the majority of the viewership, the report finds that 34% of viewers are women. These statistics contradict an earlier survey held in February showing a huge gender gap, stating that 90-94% of viewership was from men.
“Large companies like Riot Games, Valve, Wargaming and Ubisoft are placing bets on the growing success of eSports worldwide", said SuperData CEO Joost van Dreunen. "And with the booming popularity of streaming services like Twitch, ESL and MLG, it is becoming easier than ever for gamers to connect with other players and form communities that culminate in competitive gaming.” (Ed note: ESL does not have its own streaming service.)
SuperData and Newzoo jointly view the increasing popularity of free-to-play games like League of Legends and Dota 2 to be a major factor in the sector’s growth and a point of opportunity for large advertisers to connect with young, affluent males. Research results also prove that eSports enthusiasts represent the big spenders, not only on PC and console games but also on smartphones and tablets
Newzoo’s report features results from recent nation-wide consumer research in the US and key EU countries. It profiles 31.4M US and 16.3M West-European eSports viewers. The report distinguishes different groups of eSports enthusiasts based on viewing behavior and level of active participation.
40% of eSports viewers can be seen as truly engaged eSports enthusiasts, participating in amateur tournaments and/or watching eSports content regularly. The other 60% illustrate the direct potential for continued growth of the eSports market.
ESports enthusiasts carry the biggest game wallets, with 22% of them being big spenders compared to 8% for all gamers. Contrary to expectation, eSports enthusiasts are more likely than the average gamer to be married, 52% versus 39%, and have a full-time job, 71% versus 50%.
“Long established in Asia, eSports and free-to-play, have now broken out of their niche and into Western markets", says Peter Warman, Newzoo CEO, on the relationship between free-to-play and eSports. "Does this prove there is a direct relationship between the two phenomena? At Newzoo, we believe so. Time spend and engagement have become equally important KPIs as money spend, and that is essentially what eSports delivers”.
The report estimates that League of Legends will see 42 million new players by 2015, topping out at 94 million monthly active users, with Wargaming's World of Tanks predicted to reach $590 Million in revenue by 2015.
Twitch released their own impressive report in January, which includes 12,000,000,000 minutes watched per month, over 45 million unique viewers per month, 1 million broadcasters per month and 6,000,000 total videos broadcast per month. 5,100 of those broadcasters are partners, and minutes watched and videos broadcasts have doubled since 2012, with unique viewers up from 20 million in 2012. Twitch users watch on average 106 minutes of content per day.
“When video game historians will look back on gaming a decade from now, 2013 will be the year they cite as the tipping point of streaming”, said Twitch's VP of Marketing Matthew DiPietro at the time. “Every major event, publisher, developer and media outlet in the gaming industry had a presence on Twitch, and streaming became an ever-present piece of the gaming experience. And it’s only going to get bigger."

Young adults competing in international tournaments in a team environment for millions in prize money. What's not athletic about that? It's not up to you; they get athletics visas anyways
The scope what we're talking about here:

I know I know
But when I hear the word "athletic" or "athlete" I immediately associate things such as basketball, water polo, golf, snowboarding, soccer, football, tennis, bicycling, rock climbining, free running, table tennis, swimming, cheerleading, dancing, lacrosse, hockey, pole vaulting, hurdling, wrestling, mma, etc
Don't see how sitting down and playing LOL, Super Smash Bros, COD, etc puts them in the same category.
But tbh and completely fair that's just my way of thinking.

Re: Report: More than 70 million people watch eSports worldwide*
Athletes doesn't seem like the right word to me, more like competitors.
Merriam-Webster defines athlete as the following...
a person who is trained in or good at sports, games, or exercises that require physical skill and strength
a person who is trained or skilled in exercises, sports, or games requiring physical strength, agility, or stamina
They might get athletic visas, but that doesn't make them athletes in my opinion. Gaming takes skill and great hand eye coordination, but there is no physical strength involved #lawyered

There's mental strength involved though
This is great news for gaming in general tbh, i don't watch much myself but can appreciate what these guys and gals do and it takes a lot of hard work to be successful to win money at gaming.
I used to watch competitive Gears of War events a few years back but that community seems to have died off with the game itself.

Re: Report: More than 70 million people watch eSports worldwide*
I don't know if I would call them athletes, but I wouldn't underestimate the physical requirements of some games, not to mention mental. I respect them a lot, though.
I don't watch near as much as I used to, but I tune in for some of the bigger SC2 tournaments like WCS and IEM, and occasionally watch a streamer here and there if I like them. Don't watch fighting game tournaments a helluva lot either, but I make sure to catch Apex and EVO (EEEVVVVOOOOOOOOOOO). I have as much respect for the SC2 guys as I do those in the fighting game community, and enjoy them equally.
I can't wrap my head around what makes DOTA and LoL so appealing personally, but this is all good for gaming and esports.

Personally I prefer the term ARTS (action real time strategy)
Mindgames - Anything that allows you to mindgame/outplay an opponent has an appeal and the reason LoL is doing so well is:
Low system requirements and free to play allows everyone to try them out.
Easy to start playing and getting the basics, but the teamwork/strategic complexity raises the skill ceiling enough to make it viable for competitive play.
The real reason though?
DotA Allstars was the first major spike in Moba popularity - WC3 Melee was hero-centric and the WC3 moba maps (let's not forget that Aeon of Strife (PvE), Special Forces (PvE), Temple Siege (PVP) and Custom Hero Wars (PVP) were all you'd see in the Brood War custom games list, I'd even count Helms Deep as a moba) was pretty much an easy-mode/casual version of WC3 melee. In South East Asia where WC3 was pirated everywhere Garena allowed DotA to rise in popularity.
Then WoW Cataclysm happened. I swear, the biggest source of LoL players who had never played this genre before in its early days was people getting bored/fed up with WoW and that popularity simply snowballed as they got their guildies to play who then played with there friends etc. etc.
Then there's the switch from Brood War to Starcraft II which came at the right time for Koreans to be open to following/playing another esport/game en masse.

Re: Report: More than 70 million people watch eSports worldwide*
Nice little history lesson there, Phritz. I agree about mindgames, that's a reason I'm a fan of Starcraft. I'm aware of the history of them as per WC3 and all (I've said Smash64 is my childhood, which it partially is, but I'd argue WC3 offers even more nostalgia), but thanks for the review and more comprehensive look than I remember. Especially cataclysm, didn't know that.
It's just that I watch Starcraft, and without even having the mindset that Dota2/LoL are inferior, I just don't enjoy them as much, and I don't quite get why LoL has had numbers Starcaft 2 has never had. I do get that SC2 requires some money and especially not with HotS, but still never quite got the hype.
@Rossoneri Yes I've played some LoL and Dota2, and didn't really care for either of them, really.
Though in general I've taken a step back from esports. I don't even watch Starcraft much anymore, as I may have already mentioned.

Re: Report: More than 70 million people watch eSports worldwide*
With all the rage and crying over Xpecial being benched I finally realised we have made it to a real sport.
International Tournament
International Players Playing In Different Regions
Managers/Players Receiving Abuse
"I Am Better Than That" Mentality
Controversy Over Referee Decision
Congratz League We Made It!
League pulled the numbers SC2 couldn't because of the amount of streamers imo. People would watch FP streams of players online and end up liking the players themselves; leading to people following their professional results. "Watch xx because he's a good top laner" type of stuff instead of people linking to written online guides. Streaming SC2 would be counter-productive because your opponents can easily study your playstyle and how you react to things - you can't exactly gain a lot of info from individual streams about a team in League for example.
SC2 is just too intense for the "casual" (I'm using this in a sense of not wanting to go professional, not the farmville/angry birds sense" gamer. It's the only videogame that physically affects me when playing an intense match, it's not exactly a game you can play just to have fun. In league even when you lose a match you can take consolation in winning certain battles.

Tbf though that's a bit skewed. Everybody playing LoL is going to have internet and use it, which already gives it an advantage over football, and then when you compound that with the fact that the percentage of people who play LoL who are redditors is also much higher than football...it makes sense.
However, that's still impressive no matter which way you look at it

Yeah I'm pretty sure r/all is confused with wtf is going on - there's a thread hitting the top of reddit with roster changes (it's currently the equivalent of a transfer window atm) every 12 hours lol

Re: Report: More than 70 million people watch eSports worldwide*
Wasn't really sure where to say this, but the biggest fighting game tournament of the year starts tomorrow and ends the 13th- EVO.
Nothing matches the hype, the excitement and the intensity of EVO in all of the e-sports I've watched. Doesn't mean I prefer fighting games to Starcraft or Dota or anything, but that even as a guy who doesn't play fighting games and only understands what is going on at a pretty basic level in terms of moves, skills and mechanics, I always highly enjoy EVO every year. There really isn't anything like it.
I strongly suggest anyone checks it out. Specifically when they do the top 8 on Sunday (of course, I would take a break to watch the World Cup final, which is much more important )

Re: Report: More than 70 million people watch eSports worldwide*
yeah my boo
as a justin wong fan, top 8 not as hype last year (in terms of pure hype/game) but Justin Wong's play was just fantastic. The end of that game against FChamp was incredibly hype and so was that final.
Justin Wong delivers again. The king is back.
That was amazing. Can't wait for street fighter. Recently street fighter hasn't been as hype as marvel vs capcom, but PR Rog vs Infiltration last year was insane.
Absolute slaughtering of the big names before the top 8 this year in street fighter so I have absolutely no idea what to expect going into these last finals of EVO 2014.
EVO 2013 easily ahead at this point but I've enjoyed 2014, I enjoy every EVO despite my incredibly basic and limited knowledge. Anybody would. There are tons of people like me who don't know a whole lot about EVO but tune in every year- it's worth checking out.
As far as excitement goes, I haven't seen anything that matches EVO.
