Valencia won 5-0.

Juventus, Benfica, Sevilla and Valencia. Looks like Juventus' or Benfica's to win.

Jay, Benfica doesnt look do much better than the spanish teams to me. I think those teams are on a level platform, but Juventus, because of their thick defense, better than the rest.

Juve Benfica Final sounds the most attractive for this EL.

Hopefully Valencia end up winners though.

Props to Paco & Emery for Sevilla.

Not convinced with how we set up in European games at all. Such a great spine in this team yet you wouldn't know it

Although our 2nd half was fine. Lyon did absolutely nothing.

please please please let us get Benfica, italian teams are good at raping Portuguese sides (forget Mehpoli)

I don't wanna face no attacking minded Spanish team,

Valencia/Sevilla can do each other out,

in the final we have no equal in Turin so none of them has a chance, what am scared of is this semis and the 5-3-2 we play

Conte being disillusioned by the failure of 4-3-3 in the Serie A has had him blind to see how well it works for him within the European continent. One of Conte's most stubborn traits is the failure to see the difference between his Italian semantic and the one needed in Europe. If he continues to play the 3-1-4-1 in Europa League and Champions League next season; Juventus will fail. It is highly unnecessary deploying such tactical chess formations when pace, pressing and width reigns supreme in the current European thread.

Seriously if we just went with

Buffon
Licht Barz Chiello Asa
Vidal Pirlo/Marchisio Pogba
Tevez Lolrentboy Giovinco

We'd look much better in this competition.

Instead of one of our 3 CBs stepping out and being forced to try and playmake. And teams couldn't stick somebody on Pirlo then without exposing a nice little gap for somebody like Giovinco to exploit

Instead we grind our way through inferior opposition, tiring the players out physically and mentally with the same, repetitive BS

Apparantly in Europe he's not a striker either.

Would be more of a 4-3-2-1 anyway, Tevez can cut in all he likes.

Tom, what is worse about the 3-1-4-2 that lately it has caused the midfield to play so inward, that they cannot connect the midfield to attack unless they are making runs (to which they cannot in this semantic). This formation is highly detrimental for CFs in the form of Llorente, Vucinic and even Tevez considering he has to run more than he is in the box. The disconnect between the midfield and attack is cavernous and reduces the touches than LOLRents and Tevez need to create, let alone score.

Ironically Pirlo is actually better in the 4-3-3 than he is in this formation. Far more dynamic, gets to the final third more efficiently and doesn't have to sit deep like a sitting duck just to screen the defence. Sacrifices? Marchisio isn't the best in the 4-3-3 yet his new DLP role can provide the rotation with Pirlo. Bonnuci will be out for Barza and Cheillini. Wingbacks in the form of Asamoah and Licht will be pushed back to an unfamiliar role. The latter point is what has me believe why Conte is hesitant to make the transition to that in Europe.

In attack, LOLrentyboy is brilliant the 4-3-3, Giovinco's best role was on the right side of the 4-3-3 while Tevez has played wide well for City and United, despite not scoring as much.

Juventus actually need to splurge on players in order to adapt to a more European and streamlined formation.

Having an ACTUAL winger (Giovinco. See; Parma) would help.

It's not just our lack of width. It's our complete and utter lack of attacking pace and our starting line up typically has nobody who can be direct and take their man on. That's where Giovinco comes in.

All trolling/joking etc etc aside, the spine of our team is top class. But in attack we're insanely predictable and sluggish. We resort to trying overly complex 1-2s and flick ons round the corner because we don't have the pace to run in behind, or the skill to take anybody on. So our attacks break down very quickly.

Then, because we have no attacking mids or Wingers the opposition just sit on Pirlo, which means we have to let one of our defenders come out and play the ball. Which they're clearly not exceptional at being CBs and all.

Result? Bonucci putting in hopefull long balls.

Yeah, Arq. Agreed with most of it. Although personally I think Licht is better at a RB because his offensive duties are lessened and he's never been good at taking a man on or creating some space in which to put a cross in.

Asamoah would be the compromise, but I have faith in him as defensively he's been nothing short of brilliant for us for the most part.

This 3-1-4-2 and the way we deploy it means unless we have a fit & firing Vucinic (Which is a rare thing indeed( we have nobody to bridge the gap between midfield and attack

Opposition who on paper are nowhere near us, are able to shut us down and isolate our front pair + put plenty of pressure on Pirlo.

Of course, if you just watch us in Europe every now and then you can dismiss it as being an 'off game' or a 'one off'

But it happens more often than not. And it really shouldn't.

Okay, I'm still not recovered from the Valencia - Basel match. The Basel side was so bad today, only Yann Sommer excelled, but even his heroics couldn't overcome the total failure of the rest of his team.

-The Official Club of Europa League>Champions League Gathering- Pt.II - Page 10 Ys11
Not amused that he brought Basel into extra time to have it all squandered

With D.Degen, Schär, and Sio I wasn't even sure what they were playing, as football it wasn't.

And don't let me start about the sheer stupidity of Marcelo Diaz and Gaston Sauro for acting like braindead ijits getting themselves sent-off when Basel were already completely exhausted in the first place.

Okay, all that said - congrats to Valencia and make sure to win the Cup now.

You're right about Licht as I completely forgot about him in Lille, Lazio and Hitzfeld's Switzerland in which he play(ed) RB and with excellent success.

Asamoah a doubt for me as the WB role gives him central precedence since he is naturally a CM. Difference between playing WB and FB can be massive, look at Christian Maggio for Napoli or Aurelio what he was for LFC.

Pirlo in the '1' of the 3-1-4-2 can be isolated given that sitting in front of the defence can have you a sitting duck and inviting the bulk of the pressure towards you by default. Pirlo in the 4-3-3 is more fluid and interchangeable. He doesn't screen the defence well in that role yet isn't phased out of the midfield then.

LOLRentsy has been used recently like Caparros used him in Athletic, a targetman devoid of the freedom to move deeper and collect the ball. In Bielsa's 3-3-1-3, 4-2-3-1 and 4-3-3 he did all that yet surprise, did not when played in Bielsa's 3-1-4-2. 3-5-2 is different considering you have an AM to connect the midfield to attack, something Juventus need. Might be pedantic yet the difference in these formations is more the roles given than the shape itself.

actually Asamoah was used and has played LB for Ghana in the last AfCon in SA, don't see where he would have a problem with that if Juve switched to a back 4.

Lich is a natural RB

its more down to Conte's stubbornness and love for Bonucci than anything else if you ask me.....
