Did Mourinho ruin Ronaldo?
Aesthetically that is.
He was so fun to watch under Pellegrini and borderline unselfish too. The disparity between his general play in 09-10 and now couldn't be further apart. Felt he was more influential in games that season and was still scoring at his usual rate as well.
Sad thing about that season is he only played 29 matches. Madrid easily walk the League that year if he remained fit for most of it, they probably win the CL too if Higuain wasn't such a bottler.

Re: Did Mourinho ruin Ronaldo?
Mourinho did nothing to him, it's the path that Ronaldo chose as a player.
If anything, it's Messi that ruined Ronaldo. CR became obsessed with keeping up with his goalscoring, started drilling shots at goal and basically playing CF.
he became pathetic imo, him winning the golden ball was a validation of all that selfishness. but then again, messi won the golden ball because he was scoring so damn much, broke meaningless records that have nothing to do with winning trophies but it's not about trophies i have heard.

I think it more had to do with him competing with Messi, then anyone ruining him tbf as nick said.

Re: Did Mourinho ruin Ronaldo?
We dropped like two points without him, Higuain was better that year. In addition to the ones you posted, he had a nice game against Getafe, and that was it.
We're playing for a damn title that year and the main thing on his mind at the end of the season was catching Higauin.
He got better after this year. Lost of stuff on the wing, but became a significantly more complete scorer, and now does the occasional tracking back and plays some decent team football every now and again. Much prefer him in his current state.

The amount of shots he takes from totally retarded positions. Must be awful playing alongside him.

lol. Could you read his mind? Here's a thought, maybe he was scoring goals to win matches? That was Higuain's best season of his career probably but an injured Ronaldo still had a better season than him.

Re: Did Mourinho ruin Ronaldo?
Ronaldo is a much better goalscorer than he was under Pellegrini. I don't think he's ruined, he's just evolved in a way.

Re: Did Mourinho ruin Ronaldo?
it really depends how you look at things. CR now is basically a CF that plays on the wing. He has sacrificed everything that made him a good team player to increase his ability to score goals. it's just that football being a collective sport, works the other way around.

What team player '' you are talking about? Ronaldo at MANU was much more selfish and less of a team player than he is now. Infact after joining La Liga and realized it is much harder to dribble in this league since the space allowed is low ...only after then he started passing and he is much superior team player no than he ever was. Granted the current version still isnt the best team player out there but he has improved alot.
Re: Did Mourinho ruin Ronaldo?
He started to evolve to the player that he is today in 07. That's the year that he started to sacrifice his all-around play to score more goals..

Re: Did Mourinho ruin Ronaldo?
As Nick said he has sacrificed everything to become a better goalscorer. to increase his numbers.
But the problem is his improved stats and number of goals only benefits himself. not Real Madrid.
for example when we say he doesn't defend :
Against Manchester, Higuain is pressing :
Carrick starts runing, Ronaldo doesn't move :
Ronaldo still not moving :
3 seconds later, Ronaldo still not moving :
Carrick has the ball, Xabi is pressing him, Carrick gives the ball to Rafael and Ronaldo still not moving :
Coentrao going to press Rafael :
Ramos is forced to move in Coentrao's position :
The gap between Varane and Ramos :
Varane has to cover for Ramos and leaves his position ( yellow area), there is a big gap between varane and Arbeloa :
Welbeck uses that gap and has the ball, one on one with Lopez :
It's what happens when your winger doesn't defend. it happens against Manchester, it happens against Bayern, It happens against Dortmund and basically it happens against every organized team Madrid faces.

Re: Did Mourinho ruin Ronaldo?
Mamad, that's post of yours brilliantly exemplifies what he does week in and week out. Sometimes running very fast on breaks in transition is not enough (which is what people describe as "defending" for him). You have to close down players and reduce the other team's passing option, follow runners, keep shape, etc...
But he will never get called out for that, the line will be, Ramos is shit, Varane is overrated, crappy defense, etc... in footy now, against highly disciplined teams, if you dont defend at 11, you will be taken out.
@Adit, Not sure if i see that substantial improvement you talk about. I do know that when he was getting booed and had screaming contests with mourinho, he made a little extra effort to improve, but just look at this season. He does not work hard off the ball at all, if anything, Benzema is working a lot harder than him, with more consistency. We saw in la liga, and we saw it vs Juve as well.

I am not shocked you Dont understand the difference between positional and transition defense, you are so young. What mamad showed up there Is an example Of a team being withdrawn in their own half defending. CR really needs to sprint full burst to keep up with Carrick in that situaTion?

Moutinho brings a up a good point actually what Ive always thought. How many people have here played for a club for either as a reserve or even starter for an official matches.

Re: Did Mourinho ruin Ronaldo?
To be brutally honest, the reason why ronaldo doesn't track back is very puzzling to me. When he does, he almost always wins the ball back or pushes the attacker off the ball, or forces a bad pass.. and he has god like stamina and speed to move up and down the flank..
On the other hand, the attitude of madrid fans in this thread is disgusting. We blame sergio ramos and co for their mistakes because its their mistakes, not ronaldos. On the welbeck chance you posted, that really isn't all ronaldos fault. Sure, things like that present the team with a weakness, but if the guy is scoring loads of goals.. and winning goals at that a season, I think I'll keep him on for the ride.
The sooner CR moves to CF with benz playing AM behind him the better for the team. I think after this season he will make the transition
And one more thing, to harhar and nick.. you can't lose all around ability all of a sudden. This is the biggest myth on GL and its clear neither of you actually play football to understand this, so I understand..

Re: Did Mourinho ruin Ronaldo?
so you are saying that he never had it to begin with? it doesnt matter if he has those all around qualities, and he is not using them, point remains that he aint doing it. Besides, i didnt say he lost anything, i said he re purposed his role on the pitch, and it became all about scoring. Him refusing to defend to save energy is just another consequence of that.
