I have always considered Illarra as an excellent ball winner. I don't know the stats but even as a CM half the time he has won the ball the most in our team after Pepe. But if we were to go after a DM then I wouldn't mind luiz gustavo. Martinez is unobtainable and would be too expensive anyways. we need alot of depth next season especially if we win CL because we are going to play alot of games. We need 2 midfielders at least

Illarra's problem is that he has not been played in his preferred position alot this season and people are basing their opinions of him from two very recent games in which he didn't have the best of games playing as a CM.

Carlo has played him as a CM because we are short on those, while for Carlo this is a good short term strategy until he gets a back up CM it has made people draw conclusions about Illarra based on his performances there eventhough he is a CDM. For some people it's mindboggling how a CDM can't perform as the CM but it's very simple, they have got different skillsets and Illarra's skillsets fits the CDM role he has played all his life.

This is like asking Motta, Bosquets, Martinez or Gabi to play CMs it just won't happen and they are going to be left horribly exposed and people ate going to start calling them overrated and whatnot, the reality is that some players especially the defensive ones are made to play one position only even if they are very good passers because their style of play is different from that of the CMs and vice versa, you can't make a CM play at CDM because the same would happen with them
