Re: Fulham 1 - 3 Arsenal: Crisis club win again
I was surprised how well Giroud did in the air against Hangeland (well we all know he is massively tall) and Hughes (has a great leap). And especially considering how bad he usually is in aerial duels with shorter CBs.Sina wrote:Great win
hopefully some players will get much needed rest a head of NLD contrary to what AW said post match
most frequent pass comb for us was Per to Bac
not really surprising
Giroud won decent amount of duels then Commentators jinxed him for 2nd half
Another 5pud2 is coming COYG

Think the commentators said he won 8 of the 9 aerial duels with Hangeland

You think it just a turn in confidence? I think it is. It is his second season in the league. He is settling now. Enjoying his football, scoring more goals and just boosting his confidence.Lex wrote:Think the commentators said he won 8 of the 9 aerial duels with Hangeland

Re: Fulham 1 - 3 Arsenal: Crisis club win again
Fantastic team display yet again, carrying on from where we left off in Turkey. I've yet to see Bacary Sagna have a bad game at centre-back - he was rock solid yesterday.
There was a lot of pressure on Podolski to perform because of the rumours that he could leave and the fact he'd lost his place in the team, but he was excellent yesterday.
Ramsey, Rosicky & Cazorla were fabulous yet again, and whilst Wilshere was poor at first when he came on - he improved as the game went on. His fitness is getting better.
Giroud, 3 in 3, what can I say. He looks like he'll be a second season man. Wonderful touch for our 3rd goal.
Szczesny 7
Jenkinson 6.5
Sagna 7.5
Mertesacker 7
Gibbs 7
Ramsey 7.5
Rosicky 7
Walcott 6.5
Cazorla 8
Podolski 8
Giroud 7.5

Walcott is beast at counterattcking ad yesterday he got the space. We were for taking fulham pressure and team was defend like a unit. They lost the ball and arsenal were quivkly on the counter.
A dm would not be much use because arsenal are a team which relies on ball playing dm. This is what the formation demands tactically some on who can play defence splitting pases yet be god defensively.

Re: Fulham 1 - 3 Arsenal: Crisis club win again
Themes of this analysis: Arsenal exploiting space behind Fulham's midfield, Arsenal counters, Scott Parker having a bad time, tracking player runs and the joys of marking.
To start with, let's look at one of the first instances of Arsenal finding space in midfield.
Next, let's look at the first of Arsenal counter attacks:
Onto our first goal, which came from a situation almost identical to our earlier chance:
The second goal was similar:
Arsenal were guilty of not picking up runners, too:
Finally, let's look at Fulham's goal:
To start with, let's look at one of the first instances of Arsenal finding space in midfield.
- Arsenal Chance:
The attack started when Jenkinson skipped past Taarabt's lazy attempt at a tackle and ran with the ball down the flank. At that point, there was no immediate danger for Fulham as Jenkinson only had Giroud in the box to cross to. Jenkinson decided to hold play up and look for a better option.
We can see that Rosicky was an obvious passing option. Just before that, two things happened that made that option available. Firstly, Adel Taarabt made no effort to catch up with Jenkinson and double up on him with Riise. Secondly, Walcott made a run that took Steve Sidwell, originally blocking off the passing channel, with him. Combined, this allowed Jenkinson the time and space to play the ball back to Rosicky.
With acres of room, Rosicky lofted the ball over the Fulham defence to Walcott, who was denied by a decent stop by Stockdale.
Next, let's look at the first of Arsenal counter attacks:
- Arsenal Counter Attack:
At the point that Fulham's attack broke down, Arsenal had 10 players, including the keeper, inside their penalty area. Fulham had six, plus two waiting outside the area. This was noteworthy for two reasons: 1) it showed just how committed the Arsenal team were to defending and 2) a good number of these players were up the other end of the pitch in a matter of seconds.
Ramsey picked the ball up and passed it to Cazorla. He then began to make a run forward as Cazorla lofted the ball out to Walcott. In doing so, he was aiming to be in a position where he could continue the counter.
Walcott was quickly closed down by the Fulham player, but because of Ramsey's run, he had an immediate escape. Ramsey was in a very advantageous position to receive a pass.
Ramsey then slowed it down a bit in order to allow Walcott to make a run in behind. He also had Cazorla (far left) and Giroud up with him. Effectively, it was a 4v4 situation. Ramsey played Walcott in behind, making it a 3v2.
Walcott then came inside onto his left foot but delayed the pass too long, which scuppered the counter for Arsenal. You can see though that Arsenal had six players in and around the Fulham area. Had Walcott played the ball over to the left hand side, where Arsenal at least two spare men, earlier, they may have scored.
Onto our first goal, which came from a situation almost identical to our earlier chance:
- Arsenal's First Goal:
As with earlier, Jenkinson had the ball on the right hand side. That time, Taarabt was closer to him, and there was no run that pulled Sidwell out the way. So had there been in a player where Rosicky was earlier, Fulham would have been in a better position to handle that.
Unfortunately for them, the problem came from Sidwell's midfield partner, Parker.
As the ball is played back to Cazorla, Sidwell moved forward to meet him. This left Ramsey in space that could drop into. The closest Fulham player to him, Parker, didn't seem to realise that Ramsey had a lot of room and made no move to rectify that.
Cazorla played the ball forward to Ramsey, who had plenty of time and space to turn on the ball and assess his options. The through pass to Giroud wasn't really on, so he had a choice between passing to Walcott or shooting. He chose the latter. The shot just happened to hit Giroud, who did extremely well to adjust his feet and put the ball into the back of the net.
The second goal was similar:
- Arsenal's Second Goal:
Parker pushes forward out of position in order to engage Rosicky and not allow him to turn. In doing so, he left a huge gap behind him that Podolski cleverly took advantage of.
Rosicky played the ball back to Mertesakcer, who then lofted a good pass to Podolski who was then in lots of room. Sidwell came across to meet him, leaving the responsibility of marking Cazorla to Taarabt - you can clearly Sidwell gesturing towards Cazorla. Unforutnately, Taarabt sucks defensively and just watched as Cazorla drifted in a nice big pocket of space and received Podolski's pass.
This was a very good example of the benefits of having men in between the lines. Look at how Fulham's right sided centre back had to push out of the backline in order to close down Podolski. Now imagine if Cazorla was a few yards closer to Podolski; he would have been in a great position to receive a pass and play in Giroud in behind. Similarly, imagine if Arsenal had an additional player in the same space as Cazorla; that extra player would have allowed Arsenal to exploit the gap between Hangerland and Riise.
Cazorla played in Walcott, who's shot was parried out towards Podolski. Parker was too slow in getting back and allowed Podolski to get on the end of the loose ball and power the ball in.
Overall, Parker did not cover himself in glory.
Arsenal were guilty of not picking up runners, too:
- Fulham Chances:
You can't see him clearly in the screenshot, but Riise was available on the far left with lots of space. This was made possible Taarabt coming inside and occupying Jenkinson. Hangerland played an excellent long pass to find Riise.
Take note of how Podolski was not in line with the rest of the midfield.
Because Fulham had a 2v1 against Jenkinson, the Arsenal backline had to shuffle across. Sagna, who would ordinarily be marking Berbatov, had to leave his man and come across to block off Taarabt's route into the penalty area. Mertesacker, who would have been marking Kasami, had to come across and mark Berbatov. Gibbs, who would be keeping an eye on Duff on the far right, then had to come across and mark Kasami.
Take notw of how Podolski can see Duff but doesn't make an effort to get back.
Because of our backline having to shuffle across, Duff was completely free at the back post. Podolski was absolutely no where near him, so when Taarabt's shot was saved by Szczesny, Duff was still in acres of room to get another shot away. Fortunately, Szczesny was able to save that one, too.
Both Walcott and Podolski were guilty of not going with their man in this move. Walcott allowed Riise to run in behind him unchecked, and had he gone with him the whole move might have been prevented. When the attack did happen, Podolski failed to get back and mark and Duff. Neither of these two are that great at tracking back and this was a good example of it.
Finally, let's look at Fulham's goal:
- Fulham Goal:
Immediately, we can Jenkinson had a problem. He marked Kasami, knowing that if Sagna failed to intercept the cross, he had to be in a position where he could cover. However, in doing so, he would leave Darren Bent free.
The cross reached Berbatov, who did brilliantly to take it down, swivel and get a shot on goal. I thought Mertesacker could have been tighter to Berbatov and now allow him to turn.
Sagna then had Kasami marked, but Jenkinson was unaware of Bent behind him. In this sort of situation, someone had to tell Jenkinson that Bent was there. Cazorla was perhaps the ideal person to do this since he had the best view on the edge of the area.
Now, since we can't hear the players communicating, we can't say for certain if Jenkinson got a call or not. As it was, when the ball came out to Bent, Jenkinson was not in a position where he could get there first. So either Jenkinson got a shout but didn't make a move, or he didn't get a shout at all and wasn't aware that Bent was there.
Either way, we can see why communication is very important.

Re: Fulham 1 - 3 Arsenal: Crisis club win again
Just reinforces the fact that I'm serious when I say Parker is one of the worst players I've ever seen. Not good defensively (despite his repuatation), absolutely zero tactical and/or positional awareness, offers no attacking presence other than running into a cul de sac. Worst of all is his turns in a circle and his taking 50 more touches than needed on the ball. Only thing he's good for is hard work, which, fair play to him, he always offers. I guess I can respect that at least as opposed to lazy players like Taraabt.
So glad he's not at Tottenham anymore. Anyway, good win.
