Re: Summer Transfer Rumours Mk.IX
Arsenal's waiting game clearly doesnt work any more..It results in signing players in dead line day and with no pre-season they starts horrible, only gets going from month 3 onwards. There are too much clubs with money now, clubs can always sell player to another bidder.
Re: Summer Transfer Rumours Mk.IX
Is it really a waiting game though from Wenger?
Is it not, he just simply refuses to sign players who cost more than they are worth and therefore it will always take longer to find the target and make a deal? Also when you wait to the end, certain clubs are desperate to sell and you can take advantage.
I think there are positives and negative and for a team in Arsenal's position, its not a bad way to go.

Re: Summer Transfer Rumours Mk.IX
I think Wenger is just at the wrong club right now. He needs people to counterbalance his thrift and patience. You would think they are great qualities in a manager, which they are, but it seems he's got comfortable in a certain place which he thinks he can maintain with bare minimum just on the strength of his own ability and confidence in what he as.
None of these are bad qualities to me, think it's the responsibility of other people to show some initiative and put some real pressure on him.

I rarely see a team desperate to sell in todays market. Even when they are desperate, for quality players there are number of clubs with money waiting for them.
I think the reason Madrid got 40 mill for Higuain was not because we negotiated better...it is just that there were number of clubs with money after him which increased his value.6 or 7 years back Higuain wouldve gone for 15 or 18 mill max because there will not be any competition to sign him and it woudlve been another Madrid selling player for way less than his actual value.
I think we have to be realistic and agree that the market is inflated and done. The value of a player is not decided by wenger,it is decided by the clubs and it seems almost all the quality players are priced very high because they will get what ever money they ask selling to Monaco,PSG,Napoli,Chelsea etc.
Add to that Wenger had a monopoly in french market which is no longer valid due to Monaco and PSG getting richer.

Re: Summer Transfer Rumours Mk.IX
At the end of the window, they will some clubs who have no choice but to be desperate.
Either there are clubs in bad financial situations or players who are demanding to leave and keeping them is not much of an option.
I agree with your last 2 paragraphs adit, but that doesnt mean Wenger will change his way of doing things. He isnt going to spend more than players are worth and I dont blame him.
He must of been as flabbergasted as I was to hear Higuain for 30-35m...no way he should of paid that and I dont understand how he can get criticism for that.
He doesnt deciede the value of players no, but he has a choice if he thinks his club should pay that value.

Re: Summer Transfer Rumours Mk.IX
Judging a player's worth on what teams like City, Chelsea and PSG are prepared to spend/waste on them is ridiculous. Napoli just finished flogging Cavani off to PSG, so naturally, Benitez had some cash to flaunt and desperately needed a big name to fill the void, so he was willing to spend as much of the Cavani cash as possible to land Higuain, regardless of if Higgy was worth the final amount paid

Re: Summer Transfer Rumours Mk.IX
Not criticizing him at all but pointing out that he will be forced to offer huge amounts for players soon...the 40 mill bid for Suarez shows he is indeed changing his way of doing transfer.
Re: Summer Transfer Rumours Mk.IX
I think that value is based on supply and demand.... the marketplace dictates value. You're in a capitalist environment in football mercatos.
You can scream and yell that you think the marketplace is overvaluing players. But frankly, it's irrelevant and the market doesn't care what you think. If people are willing to pay a price, the market will sell it at that price. If there are no buyers, the prices will drop. Very simple.
To me, Wenger is living in lala land. You don't like the prices? Tough shat. That's how the footy world works. It's been like this forever and, even during the financial crisis, there was no drop in pricing, which means there is no bubble in prices... the market is efficient.
So you either play the game or you get the frak out.

I know, im just saying.
I dont think he is changing, Suarez is reasonable...close enough to his value. Higuain for 35 though is not.

And he is cool with that and so should everyone else be.
Instead of getting suckered into the stupidity, sign some kids for cheap and make reasonable bids for players where he can.

One of the best posts I have read on GL
When you aren't talking about french players, Ligue 1 or Madrid you are contender for the GOAT.

What game should Wenger play, Sportz? Blowing £100 million on Bale? Or perhaps £28 million on Milner?

I agree, his approach to football and the transfer market is just not compatible in the modern game where money rules all.

Re: Summer Transfer Rumours Mk.IX
I dont like "this is how the market is". Like everyone has no choice but to accept these prices and its out of everyones hands.
Clubs signings players they dont need for twice the value...dont do shit like that and maybe just maybe, the market aint like that.

Re: Summer Transfer Rumours Mk.IX
But what choice do they have? Clubs like Arsenal are going to struggle to compete in the transfer market with joke outfits like Man City and Chelsea because their owners have no concept of building a sustainable legacy with careful financial management, they just throw stupid amounts of money about then write it off.
15 year ago there's no way players would pick Man City over Arsenal, now then Northerners will happily pay twice as much not only in fees, but wages than the Londoners.

Re: Summer Transfer Rumours Mk.IX
Here's a question
Let's fast forward 15-20 years, let's say the City owner pulls out completely, and they fail to find backing from another Billionaire. Do you think City/whoever else it happens to be would be in grave danger?

Gianluca Di Marzio wrote:Pause for thought. Two days stop to ponder the best decision. The Naples thinks, currency, reflects after yesterday's meeting with the Port Jackson Martinez. The situation is clear. The Azzurri club has offered 30 million Euros and is willing to go up to 32. The Port, however, declined the request of 40 million, and is ready to take up 37-38 million. So dance 5 million euro. The parties took two days off to reflect, while Napoli also begins to evaluate alternative solutions. With Martinez in the mind.
